HAZEL IRVINE AT THE WOMEN'S BRITISH OPEN
Hosting the Women's British Open on the Old Course at St Andrews makes this perhaps the most significant week ladies' professional golf has ever had.

Louise Suggs helped found the LPGA Tour in 1950 and she has travelled over this week at the age of 84 to see women finally play a professional event at the home of golf.

She certainly never thought she would live to see the day that it happened and it makes you realise what an historic moment this is.

All the players have a real sense of the importance of the occasion.

It has been quite hard for them to articulate how special it is, but they are almost wide-eyed with enthusiasm given their reverence for the place.

Reality has settled in now though after the start of the second round. This famous course can bite you, as many of the players are finding out, especially England's Laura Davies.

She will be very disappointed after taking a double bogey seven at the 17th hole which resulted in her finishing day two on six-over-par.

But don't give up on the British bid.

There are a few up there, Rebecca Hudson, Karen Stupples and Catriona Matthew will all use their experience on this sort of Links course over the weekend.

The woman they all have to catch is Lorena Ochoa, who set the standard with a super first round of 67.

It was important someone set a marker and appropriately it came from the Mexican, who is the current world number one.

Remarkably, she has never won a major but she has come so close on many occasions.

It is definitely a case of when, not if, she finally does win one of the big four tournaments and she is looking good to break her duck on Sunday.
