CAMERA RECOGNIZES LICENSE PLATES, RUNS WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED
Appian Technology has introduced a camera that recognizes vehicle
license plates, then reports the results to traffic and police
authorities using integrated wired or wireless communications. The
Stinger Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera is based on a
1.4 GHz Pentium processor running Windows XP Embedded.

MICROSOFT LURES LINUX HACKERS WITH "FREE SUPPORT"
"Linux" and "free" are practically synonymous, but what about the cost
of support? Developers visiting LinuxWorld in San Francisco next week
won't have to worry about any hidden costs when Microsoft's Windows
Embedded team lures them out of the convention center for free food and
drink.

JAPANESE TV PORTAL TO DEPLOY STBS RUNNING WINDOWS CE
A2i has announced a Windows CE-based set-top box (STB) that supports
IPTV (Internet protocol television) and video-on-demand (VOD) features.
The company currently expects at least 10,000 units of its "X-720" STB
to be deployed by an unnamed "Japanese TV portal" service over the next
12 months.

MICROSOFT SEEKS OSI'S APPROVAL OF SHARED SOURCE
Microsoft says it will submit one or more of its Shared Source licenses
to the Open Source Initiative (OSI) for review and approval as open
source licenses. The move represents a major shift in strategy for the
company, which has previously refused to seek any such approval.

PROTECTING WINDOWS-BASED KIOSKS FROM USER TAMPERING
A post on the Windows XP Embedded team blog describes how to prevent
Windows XP Embedded-based kiosks from being tampered with. As Jim
Medding, a software developer for the test team, notes, a security
problem can result from the use of StickyKeys, a feature intended to
help users with disabilities.

DRM IS HERE TO STAY, ANALYSTS SAY
Despite the recent announcement of "DRM-free" music tracks by Apple and
Amazon.com, Digital Rights Management (DRM) is not about to go away. At
least, that's the main conclusion of a report, "Digital Rights
Management Update," made available this week by the market research firm
In-Stat.

Windows XP Embedded tester Lynda Allen has been blogging recently about
how to add features to Target Designer, the tool used for developing a

BLUETOOTH, GPS TO BECOME UBIQUITOUS
In its financial report for the quarter ending June 29, 2007, CSR
(formerly Cambridge Silicon Radio) forecast continued growth in the
Bluetooth market, particularly in new non-cellular areas such as PMPs,
gaming consoles, cars, and cameras. Interestingly, the company said it
is readying a Bluetooth chip with built-in software-based GPS.

ROBOT CONFERENCE FEATURES HUMANS, HUMANOIDS
"Dexter" is a robot said to walk more like a human than any yet created.
He and his wheeled cousin, "Monty," will be among the attendees at the
RoboDevelopment Conference and Exposition, to be held this October in
San Jose, Calif.

More gigabytes of NAND-based storage will ship in 2007 than the
sum-total of all DRAM shipped since 1970. This is one of many gems of
