AR2007 Conference Sets New Records

More than 800 participants from throughout the U.S. and a record-breaking ten countries attended the Animal Rights 2007 National Conference held July 19-23 in Los Angeles. Thanks to our expanded promotion, unprecedented numbers of visitors also attended the free exhibits and were introduced to vegan and animal rights messages.

A record 100+ speakers from 70 groups presented in 120 sessions. Nearly 90 organizations exhibited their literature, food and merchandise.

More than 50 documentaries of animal abuse and protective actions were screened, including three premiere showings. This year's highlight was a series of workshops on the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.

James LaVeck & Jenny Stein and Kevin Kjonaas were elected to the prestigious U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame by AR2007 speakers.

James and Jenny met Eddie Lama at the Animal Rights 1997 Conference. The resulting award-winning documentary "The Witness" chronicled Eddie's transformation into an animal rights activist. They have since produced "Peaceable Kingdom" addressing the tragedy of animal agriculture.

Kevin founded and led SHAC USA, devoted to exposing and stopping animal cruelty at New Jersey's Huntington Life Sciences Laboratory. He is currently serving a six-year sentence, under the Animal Enterprise Protection Act, along with five colleagues, for posting anti-HLS information on their website. The sentence is under appeal.

Vegetarian Society of DC president Saurabh Dalal received the newly renamed Henry Spira Grassroots Activist Award. Henry Spira, who died in 1998, is renowned for pioneering grassroots activism in the U.S. animal rights movement.

Saurabh was celebrated for his transformation of a local vegetarian group into one of the world's largest and most active vegetarian societies and for his volunteer consulting for several national animal rights organizations, including FARM.

Musicians Tom Scholz and John Feldmann received the Celebrity Animal Advocates Awards (see side panel).

World Farm Animals Day Plans Under Way

Communities throughout the U.S. and a dozen other countries have begun planning their World Farm Animals Day event on or around October 2 (Gandhi's birthday).

WFAD observances include creative and attention-grabbing events such as vigils, protests, cage-ins, die-ins, funeral marches, video screenings, fasts, and memorial services. Other events can include leafleting, info tables & lectures.

Speak out for those who can't – host an event and we'll help!

We provide: FREE display and handout materials, instructions, an online Events Directory, and media liaison.
