Today, I'd like to discuss a very serious matter with you: the
sorry plight of deposed Nigerian officials who need someone's
help to access millions of hidden dollars. From the emails
that I've received from these officials over the years, one thing
is clear: they make poor, uninformed financial decisions. Suitcases and
locked chests are no place to keep millions of dollars. Mutual
funds, savings bonds, and 401K's are much better investments.
How sad that one country would turn out so many wealthy,
political science majors and so few money managers to help
them out. These unfortunate leaders have to rely on average,
middle class Americans like myself and my co-workers for
assistance. But we know the cardinal rule of the Internet. If
someone asks for financial help from you, don't give him
your bank account number. Give him your credit card
instead. It's safer, more convenient, and accepted everywhere you go.
The next time you receive an email from a former Nigerian
official don't delete it. Do that official a favor. Send him the
contact information of a good financial planner, one who
knows that a suitcase full of cash can't offer the same APY
as a bank.
Until next time,
Tara Hall
