V. 1, No. 35

The SAGs. The Tonys. The Annual Inspirational Country Music Awards Show (we kid you not, people!). Nowadays, there are so many award shows, a red-carpeted ceremony is hardly attention grabbing — and with all the DUIs and jailbirds running around town, aren't there more riveting tales to be told? But despite award fatigue, the Emmys are in a category of their own. Classic Tinseltown glamour, glitz, and (oh yeah) talent — this is an award show to get us talking.

Bored with Will and Grace and The West Wing sweeps? Well, the recent change in voting rules means the field's wide open for an all-new crop of talent. Gone from the running are long-time heavy-hitters, and this year you can expect to see a lot from newcomers like Ugly Betty (leading the comedy field with 11 nominations) and 30 Rock.

Also, unlike past years when network shows ruled the roost, cable networks have produced an unstoppable batch of programs, from Entourage to Weeds, following in the footsteps of Deadwood and, last but not least, The Sopranos (with their 15 nominations, we think they'll go out with a bang).

Now are you ready for some shake-ups? Hollywood's buzzing over Lost's shutout after delivering what some critics say is the best season yet. Why no love? And this year was the last chance for Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls to pick up a nomination but the Academy apparently wasn't feeling sentimental. Another no-show was the loveable John Krasinski, who was expected to ride The Office's popularity into a nomination. Heroes finally got the respect that most have been saying it deserves, but can the superheroes snag a statue or two? Only time will tell.

The Emmys have always had their fair share of controversy and this year is no different. Justin Timberlake is up for Best Original Song with his, err, ditty about boxes. And "presents." Alec Baldwin will be on hand and could pick up an award, but cross your fingers that he doesn't decide to pick up a phone as well. Also expected to make some waves is not-afraid-to-say-what's-on-her-mind Sarah Silverman. Let's hope she doesn't run into Paris at the swag bag pick-up spot or there could be a red carpet brawl — and not just because the poor little rich kids are being forced to pony up for their freebies.

While the fashion fuzz usually gets to put their feet up at this scandal-challenged event, well-known for its yawn-inducing couture, there is the occasional misstep. But we sure do hope the stars learned their lesson when it comes to supporting roles. Keep an eye out for style queens Katherine Heigl and newlywed Eva Longoria who usually dress to the nines.

And while we can discuss the Emmys until we're blue in the face, nothing compares to the real thing. What's going to happen this year? Make sure you check out the drama, the fashion, and the awards when the stars come out to play on Sunday, September 16.
