Ginn Plans To Stay Around
Bobby Ginn says that he plans on sticking around as a minority owner of Dale Earnhardt Inc. and believes the recently announced merger between the two companies was in the best interest for his Ginn Racing team. The golf resort mogul wore a DEI shirt as he spoke Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway just two days after his three-team Nextel Cup operation was folded into DEI's three-team organization with two of Ginn's cars ending up being eliminated. "I'm not getting out, and I'm still willing to invest more in racing," Ginn said. "I think it's a good business. ... I'm going to be around the track, and I'm going to bug [DEI's] Max [Siegel] and those guys. "This does help in the respect that I have a very alive, a very large other business that I love, and that's what I do. It was never intended for me to come down here and run a race shop. To have the ability to be involved in it financially in ownership is a way that I hope they use not only me but my resources to help expand the team." ...More

TNT's Experiment A Success
Turner Network Television's experimental telecast of the Pepsi 400 without full-screen national commercials was intriguing if not applauded by advertisers and NASCAR following the July 7 race at Daytona International Speedway. NASCAR had thwarted ESPN's plans to do vertical split-screen coverage of races as it does for the Indy Racing League because it didn't feel that would translate well to stock cars nor be effective for advertisers. But NASCAR Vice President for Broadcasting and New Media Dick Glover liked the TNT format, where about the top two-thirds of the screen displayed live action while the bottom right corner was used for a break-out box with commercials. Other graphics and/or a logo of an advertiser occupied the bottom middle and left portions of the screen throughout the race. Not only did the telecast not have national full-screen commercials, but rarely did graphics overlap the picture. "We thought it was terrific," Glover said July 16. "The fans got the information, got clever content, got to see the racing. Advertisers got a way to really get their messages through in a breakthrough way." Glover said it remains to be seen whether such a format would work 36 times a year. He said fan feedback was "outstandingly positive." The biggest impact for the fans was that only three green-flag laps were missed because of regional full-screen commercials. ...More

Kyle Busch to JGR? Larry McReynolds is hearing that the Kyle Busch deal at Joe Gibbs Racing is very close. Now, we don't have an answer on whether they're looking to put him in the #18 car, replacing J.J. Yeley, or if they are looking at Busch for a fourth team.(FoxSports)
AND captainthunderracing.com is hearing that Kyle Busch is very close to finalizing a deal that will make him the fourth driver in the Joe Gibbs Racing stable. Sources said Busch has crossed Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt, Inc. off his list of potential teams for 2008 and beyond. Speculation also had Busch going to DEI to replace Dale Earnhardt Jr., but it appears as though the DEI/Ginn Racing merger has taken up most of the executives time at DEI and Busch never felt any warmth from the organization. An announcement is expected sometime over the next week to week and a half, most likely after the big Brickyard 400 weekend. Sources said only the details of the contract remained to be worked out, but that both parties had agreed in principle to a five year deal.(captainthunderracing.com)(7-27-2007)
DEI wasn't allowed to sell #13 team's points: NASCAR wouldn't allow the new Dale Earnhardt Inc. to "partner" with another team to transfer the #13 team's points with that of an existing team because that would have given Bobby Ginn ownership of five teams, DEI Vice President John Story said Thursday. Teams are not allowed to just sell points, although most get around the requirement by remaining a minority owner after the "sale." The problem for DEI after its merger with Ginn Racing was that neither Ginn nor DEI could have the rights to more than the NASCAR limit of four teams. DEI used the #14's points to go to its #15 car of Paul Menard, which was outside the top 35. With the #13 team not entered this weekend, the 36th-place team of Bill Elliott in the #21 Wood Brothers/JTG Racing Ford will be automatically locked in the field.(SceneDaily.com)(7-27-2007)

New Co-Sponsor for Robby Gordon: This weekends Allstate 400 at the Brickyard will mark the first appearance in 2007 for Johns Manville as the co-primary sponsor of the #7 Menards Ford of Robby Gordon. Johns Manville, a Berkshire Hathaway company, is a leading manufacturer and marketer of premium-quality building and specialty products. In business since 1858, the Denver-based company has annual sales of approximately $2.5 billion and holds leadership positions in all of the key markets that it serves. Johns Manville employs approximately 8,500 people and operates 43 manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and China. Jim Beam, Mapei, and Motorola will serve as associates.(RGM)(7-27-2007)
Nemecheck to Drive at Indy UPDATE: Joe Nemechek will have a ride this weekend at Indianapolis, but which car he will drive remains in limbo. E&M Motorsports is looking to put Nemechek behind the wheel of its #08 car, but Ginn Racing may have a sponsor for the #13 -- the car from which Nemechek was bounced last week. E&M Motorsports had plans to run several races this season, beginning at Indianapolis with John Andretti at the wheel. Andretti has other commitments this weekend, so the team called on Nemechek.(NASCAR.com)(7-24-2007)
UPDATE: The #08 Team announces "Front Row Joe" Nemechek will drive the #08 car at Indy in the Allstate 400 for John Carter and EM Motorsports this weekend. Race Week Media is still searching for primary sponsorship for the car, but are confident of success with all of the support Nemechek fans are expressing. It was just over a week ago that it was announced the launch of the #08 Team and the momentum has been remarkable. The cars were loaded into the hauler late Wednesday night in Toccoa, Georgia for the ride to Indianapolis and are ready for Saturday's qualifying.(#08 Team PR)(7-27-2007)
Testing at Milwaukee: History was made Wednesday at The Milwaukee Mile, the world's oldest active speedway, as Joey Logano made his first-ever laps in a Joe Gibbs Racing Nextel Cup Series race car. The Connecticut native logged an estimated 80 laps and returned Thursday to help the team that features drivers Tony Stewart, J.J. Yeley and Denny Hamlin in gathering critical information for the team's Car of Tomorrow development. No times were reported. Logano is a year too young to compete in NASCAR's top three series, which has a minimum limit of 18 years of age. Logano races in the NASCAR Busch East Series, which allows competitors as early as 16 years of age to compete. Logano also won a NASCAR West Series race at Phoenix International Raceway and has won three Busch East events since and is the current point leader in the Busch East Series after eight races. Also testing at The Milwaukee Mile this week were Evernham Motorsports, Ganassi Racing with driver Kevin Hamlin and Roush Fenway Racing on Wednesday with David Ragan, subbing for the recently injured Carl Edwards. All teams were testing their Car of Tomorrow machines.(Milwaukee Mile PR)(7-27-2007)
