Dear Reader,
Welcome to this week's issue of "Ask The Computer Lady"!
I am so thrilled to have my son back home with us for a few weeks
leave while his foot heals! The drive to Virginia was a bit longer
than we had anticipated, between accidental detours on the way down
and traffic jams on the way home, we were on the road for more than
35 hours in two days!
I don't have any backup articles this week, but more will be coming
soon.
In the meantime, I would like to know what your biggest questions
are when it comes to purchasing a new computer. Send them in an
email to questions@asktcl.com
Have a great week,
Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,
I had someone "back up" my emails to a CD. Unfortunately I can't
access them now. All the files are listed with the extension of DBX
and won't open.
What is DBX and how do I access those files?
Thanks for a great newsletter - which I save as so many of your
readers do.
Lee
Hi Lee,
DBX files are the type of files that Outlook Express saves your e-
mail messages in.
You have to copy the files back to your hard drive, make sure they
are not read only, and then using the new Outlook Express, import
those messages.
Follow these steps to do that.
1. Create a folder on your desktop to store your files.
2. Open up the CD that contains your DBX files, and drag those files
to the folder on your desktop.
3. Right click on each file, then click on "Properties" and make
sure there is not a check mark in front of "Read Only". If there is
a check mark, click to remove it, and click the "OK" button at the
bottom of the window.
4. Open Outlook Express, and click on "File" point to "Import" and
then click on "Messages...".
5. In the resulting window, click on the version of OE that the
backup was created from. Click "Next".
6. In the "Specify Location" window, click to select "Import mail
form an OE6 store directory" and click "OK".
7. In the next window, you need to show the program where the files
are located. Click on the Browse button and find the folder on your
desktop. Click on that folder and click "OK"
8. Select the folders you want to import, and click on the "next"
button at the bottom of the window. When the process is done, click
on "Finish"

Dear Computer Lady,
My old computer crashed, but my son was able to retrieve my
files from my old hard drive. I had a special wallpaper on my
old computer that I downloaded from the internet that I just
loved. What file extension might that wallpaper have had? I'm
hoping I can find it in the old files. I was using Windows 98
at the time, but am now using Windows XP.
Thank you, Jacquelyn
Dear Jacquelyn,
The wallpaper file on your old computer probably had a .bmp
extension and was located in the C:\Windows\ folder on your
hard drive.
Since you got it off the internet, it could possibly be a .jpg
file, and might possibly be called something like
Internet_Explorer_Wallpaper.bmp or .jpg.

How to Create a Password reset disk in Windows Vista
Works in all editions of Windows Vista
One of the great things about Windows Vista is how secure it is.
This security can work against you, however, if you forget your
password.
To prevent being locked out of your own computer if you forget your
password, or if the password somehow gets corrupted, you should
create a password reset disk. This disk will allow you to create a
new password, and regain access to your files and information.
Before you create your password reset disk, you will need either a
USB flash drive or floppy disk. Many new computers do not have a
floppy disk drive, so make sure you have a floppy drive if you want
to use a floppy disk.
To create your disk, insert the floppy or USB flash drive that you
want to use, and then click on the start button in any edition of
Windows Vista, then click on "Control Panel".
In the Control Panel, click on "User Accounts", or click on "User
Accounts and Family Safety", and then click on "User Accounts".
In the left side of the window, click on "Create a password reset
disk". This will start the "Forgotten Password Wizard".
Read the information on the first page of the wizard, and click
"Next".
On the second page of the wizard, select the disk you want to use,
from the drop down list and click "Next".
Keep the disk in the computer, and type the password you are
currently using in the box. Click "Next".
Wait patiently while the wizard creates the disk and when the bar
reaches 100% click "Next".
Read the information in the last window, label your disk or flash
drive, store it in a safe place, and click "Finish".

Dear Computer Lady,
I want to start a Web Page, but can not find anyone who can help me
get to that first base start. I have little money to spend and just
need a coach or mentor to help me get started.
The Web Design program(s) from our local Tech school will not work
on my Windows XP format. Besides, funding for just one program is
not possible.
Where can I find someone that would be willing to help? I have tried
here in this small town that I live in, all, persons are too
expensive to fit into my already stretched Wal-Mart wage.
I have been reading your newsletter, and find many tips that I did
not know, and some that I did. But to get to first base in starting
a web site I haven't seen.
Thank you, BB
Dear BB,
I can help you get started with your web site. You will need three
things to get your page up on the internet.
1: Domain Name - Approximate Cost $10/year
A domain name is the name that people type to go to your website.
For example, one of the domain names that I own is
www.computerlady.org
I purchase my domain names at www.godaddy.com. It is easy to do,
they offer some of the best prices on the internet, and they have a
great control panel where you can manage all your domain names.
2: Web Hosting - $5.00 to $20.00 a month
I have used several web hosting companies over the years.
I currently am working with the iPowerweb hosting at:
http://partners.ipower.com/z/139/CD6939/
iPowerweb has a good price, is easy to use, and several of their
plans include hosting more than one domain, which is extremely
valuable if you plan to get more into internet marketing.
3: A web site - ranges from free if you know HTML to hundreds of
dollars
Now all you need is a well designed web site. If you know HTML, you
can write your own web pages in any text editor such as notepad. If
you don't know HTML, don't worry, there are many people who will
design a web site for you, or you can get some good WYSWYG (What
You See is What You Get) web design software. Basically, you design
the site like you were making a greeting card, and the program
writes the HTML for you.
I have written web sites in HTML for years, but because it is so
time consuming, I have started to use a program called Web Plus to
design my sites. You can download a free version of Web Plus at
www.freeserifsoftware.com and give it a try. I use Web Plus 10
which costs about $70. and can be found at www.serif.com .
Let me give you a good tip about Web Plus. If you sign up and
download the free version, they will send you an email offer for
the current version at a greatly reduced price.
I hope this helps you get started, let me know if you have any
more questions.
Elizabeth
