DEI Will Buy Ginn Racing
According to a report by NASCAR Scene, Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Ginn Racing will announce this week that DEI will absorb Ginn Racing. The merger will make DEI a four-car team as it adds the No. 01 car primarily driven by Mark Martin. It is expected that the No. 14 team of Ginn will have its owner points transferred to DEI's Paul Menard, who currently is outside the top 35 driving the DEI No. 15. The points transfer would put him in the top 35 in owner points and guarantee a starting position in the field. That could leave Regan Smith, who had shared the No. 01 ride with Mark Martin until being named driver of the No. 14 team last week, out of a job. It was unclear whether Smith or Aric Almirola, recently named as the co-driver of the No. 01 car, will share the driving duties with Martin the rest of the season.  ...More
Tire Auction Raises $20,000
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company , the exclusive tire supplier of NASCAR's top three racing divisions, announced that the Goodyear 'Get there'(TM) Charity Auction raised $20,000 for The NASCAR Foundation and its driver affiliated charities. As a result of the funds raised through the auction, Goodyear was awarded with the honor of being named a "Champion Friend of the Foundation" for the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season -- the highest level of participation that can be achieved by a one-time donor. The Goodyear 'Get there' Charity Auction provided fans the opportunity to bid on 43 authentic Goodyear tires individually autographed by the top NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers.  ...More
20 Finalist For Hall Of Fame
The field has been narrowed and only 20 finalists remain for induction into the Class of 2008 International Motorsports Hall of Fame, IMHOF officials announced today. The final five inductees will be elected when the last round of voting begins July 30th, 2007. This year’s nominees come from a variety of motorsport venues. From NASCAR are drivers: Red Byron, Jerry Cook, Cotton Owens, Marvin Panch and Rex White. Also representing NASCAR is a unique group of non-drivers: owner Carl Kiekhaefer, chief mechanic Maurice Petty and promoter Ralph Seagraves.  ...More
Petty To Make 800th Start
This weekend, Kyle Petty and the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge team head to the historic 2.5-mile Indianapolis (Ind.) Motor Speedway (IMS) for Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. The annual event at IMS has quickly risen to the ranks of one of the most prestigious events on the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule. Petty will join the 800 start club when he takes the green flag for the Allstate 400. Only six drivers have reached this milestone number of starts. Petty’s father, “The King” Richard Petty, sits atop the list with 1,185 starts. This weekend also marks Petty’s return to the #45 Dodge after his brief stint in the TNT Sports booth. Chad McCumbee and John Andretti filled in for Petty in his absence. Petty is one of 12 drivers entered in the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard that participated in the very first event in 1994. Petty finished 26th in this event in 2006.  ...More

DEI, Ginn Merger to Be Announced Wednesday: Dale Earnhardt Inc. will announce on Wednesday that it is merging with Ginn Racing, effective immediately, and will acquire all Ginn assets, including its massive headquarters. Sources said the company will be known as Dale Earnhardt Inc., but that Ginn owner Bobby Ginn will remain a partner in the business. DEI president Max Siegel will oversee the operation, and Ginn CEO Jay Frye will assist DEI executives John Story, Steve Hmiel and Richie Gilmore in sorting out personnel details, sources said. DEI will field four fully-funded racecars in the Allstate 400 this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- the #1 Chevy driven by Martin Truex Jr., the #8 driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr., the #15 driven by Paul Menard and the #01 driven by Mark Martin. One of Ginn's other two former cars, the #13 or 14, essentially becomes Menard's #15 team, and the other team will simply discontinue operation [rumors still say that the #78 team will get the owner points from the other team]. Menard will pick up the owner's points held by Ginn's # 13 car that was 34th. DEI plans to move its entire operation to Ginn's Mooresville, N.C., facility. The organization begun by the late Dale Earnhardt has been looking for land for almost a year because there is no room to expand at the current facility. #13-Joe Nemechek and #14-Sterling Marlin were given their release last week, with rookie Regan Smith moving into Marlin's car for the remainder of the year before the merger. Smith likely will finish the season splitting the #01 with Martin. Sources said Martin is committed to running at least 22 races for DEI next season and working long-term with the developmental driver program as he was at Ginn.(ESPN.com), for earlier information and updates, check out my #01 Team Page.(7-25-2007)

Marlin Says Ginn 'leaving me hanging': Sterling Marlin says he has had calls from other teams but can't drive for any team until he gets issues resolved with former employer Ginn Racing. "The deal caught me by surprise," the 50-year-old Marlin said. "I had a contract with them. ... I understand they've got a lot of problems over there. A couple of guys called, but I can't do nothing. Part of your contract, if you drive somebody else's car, you null and void your contract. So I'll sit and wait here and see what the lawyers say." Marlin said the team still owes him money, and while he won't like to sit around and wait, he will. "I haven't talked to Bobby [Ginn]. [They] haven't returned calls to my lawyers," Marlin said. "They're kind of just leaving me hanging. ... I'd like to get something worked out and at least finish the year out with somebody if I could."(SceneDaily.com)(7-25-2007)
Drivers Like New Bristol Surface: #17-Matt Kenseth wasn't all that thrilled when he heard that Bristol Motor Speedway was getting a facelift. He liked the World's Fastest Half-Mile just as it was and wasn't too keen on any changes. On Tuesday, Kenseth was one of 33 drivers who took part in a Busch Series test on the half-mile oval. After being on-track for several hours his reaction to the new concrete surface was a positive one. #12-Ryan Newman, who owns the track record at BMS said he liked the feel of the new surface, as well. #29-Kevin Harvick, who swept both races at Bristol in the spring of 2005, also gave the new concrete high marks.(Bristol Motor Speedway PR)(7-25-2007)

Sad News: Dave Fay Loses Battle With Cancer: Washington Times sportswriter/editor Dave Fay was a hockey man first and foremost, but he took to covering NASCAR well in recent years, quickly making friends and building sources – trademarks of the consummate beat reporter. As a result, his coverage of NASCAR was just like his hockey stuff: Crisp, concise and creative – and a gift to readers of the Times. Fay passed away last week at the age of 67 following a long bout with cancer.(NASCAR PR)(7-25-2007)

TRG (The Racer’s Group) announced today that it will enter two NASCAR Busch Series road course events beginning with the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course in Montreal , Canada on August 4, followed by the ZIPPO 200 at Watkins Glen on August 11. Kevin Buckler, TRG owner, will partner with the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing to field the No. 47 Clorox/TRG Ford Fusion. The crew chief on the car will be Scott Zippadelli. TRG was founded by Kevin and Debra Buckler in 1993 and has been competing at the top level of sports car racing ever since. TRG has the most wins of any team in Grand-Am history with 22, including the 2005 and 2006 Rolex Series GT championship trophy to go along with wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours or Le Mans.Buckler and the TRG group have been planning this step for the last three years. After several trips to Charlotte to visit with top teams, as well as taking advice from fellow team owners, friends, and partners, the group felt the timing was right for its entry into the Busch Series. Dacula , Georgia resident Andy Lally will drive the Clorox TRG Busch Series entry. Lally and Buckler have been a fixture on the racing scene since 2004. The Lally/ Buckler combination has resulted in two championships and 14 race wins to date. (TRG PR -Photo, TRG) (07-24-07)
When it comes to experience in the NASCAR Busch Series, few have Jason Keller (No. 11 CJM Racing Chevrolet) beat. The 17-year series veteran is closing in on Tommy Houston’s all-time starts record (417) and is only two starts away from tying Dale Jarrett’s Bristol Motor Speedway record. So, after 27 races at “Thunder Valley,” Keller had no problem identifying changes made during the track’s recent resurfacing.“It’s definitely different,” Keller said. ”There is not as much transition down in the corners, which makes the car more comfortable getting in and should lead itself to side-by-side racing.” His observations came during a NASCAR Busch Series test at Bristol on Tuesday. Thirty-three teams were at the track testing on the new concrete surface installed after the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on March 25. Although no major changes were made to the track, variable banking was added to the turns to help smooth the transition to the straightaways. The new surface also eliminated many of the bumps in the track. “I didn’t believe it was going to be so smooth,” Keller said. “And I honestly didn’t remember it being so rough, until you feel how smooth it is now. “ A glance at the top morning times: 1. Jason Leffler, No. 38 Toyota – 16.083 seconds/119.306 mph 2. Kyle Busch, No. 5 Chevrolet – 16.100 seconds/119.180 mph 3. Bobby Labonte, No. 77 Chevrolet – 16.140 seconds/118.885 mph 4. Dennis Setzer, No. 24 Chevrolet – 16.153 seconds/118.789 mph 5. Steve Wallace, No. 66 Dodge – 16.157 seconds/118.760 mph (NASCAR PR) (07-24-07)

Shane “Shakes” Hakes, who served as a tire specialist on the No. 90 crew was critically injured in a motorcycle accident on July 15. As Shakes continues to recover at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., the CitiFinancial Racing Crew and the No. 90 CitiFinancial Ford will carry the special “Racing for Shakes” logo for the second week in a row on Saturday at the O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. Stephen Leicht, seen here sharing his i-pod with Shakes, will adorn rookie stripes on the back of his No. 90 CitiFinancial Ford for this weekend’s race at ORP as he eyes a trip to victory *** in honor of his injured friend. “I’ve raced at ORP before in the ASA series, it’s a very cool race track. I actually have the track record here in ASA, so  I’m looking forward to returning for the first time in a Busch car. The track is very flat but forgiving, you can run in really low and let you car drift up all the way to the wall. It is pretty easy to pass and you can run side-by-side. It is a little tricky to get your car to handle well at ORP. There are really long sweeping corners so you need your car to have a lot of grip. The extra rookie practice will be a huge bonus in getting the CitiFinancial Ford dialed in for a solid run.” Leicht enters the event in Indy eighth in the point standings with one win from Kentucky. Before making the trek to the Indiana short track, Leicht will also travel to Pevely, MS on Wednesday to compete with several other NASCAR drivers in Kenny Schrader’s Night of the Stars dirt track event at I-55 Raceway. On Thursday, he'll compete in the sixth annual Jeff Gordon Bowling Tournament in Indianapolis. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Riley Hospital for Children.  (Photos, CIA, Cavali - PR Compiled, via RYR)

ORP Success All Relative For Terry Cook
07-23-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
Like many drivers, Terry Cook found getting around the .686-mile O'Reilly Raceway Park oval a bit tricky early in his career. That is, until he found out the fast way around was all relative. "My relatives - the East family - have raced for years at O'Reilly Raceway Park in the USAC Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown cars and my father-in-law, Bob East, had a lot to do with me getting better at there," said Cook (right), who will steer the No. 59 HT Motorsports Toyota Tundra in the Power Stroke Diesel 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Clermont, IN track this Friday evening
