Billboards for the Texas Rangers suggest fans give their BlackBerry some alone time, but starting today, the team is encouraging the use their mobile devices as their ticket to the game.

The Rangers are among a handful Major League Baseball teams to launch Tickets@Phone, a ticketing technology that sends a barcode to a mobile phone or device that is read by a special scanner to gain entry to a game.

For busy baseball fans, the new ticketing technology means being able to buy tickets online at the last minute while avoiding lines at the Will Call window.

But for the Rangers, the Tickets@Phone launch signals the latest way the team is trying to get more detailed information about who its customers are and how to sell to them at the same time.

TOMORROW'S INSIGHTS TODAY: Scott Burns

Finding the best CD rates

Question: How do I go about finding the best CD rates?

C. M., by email

Answer: The two major web sites that provide yield information are www.bankrate.com and www.banxquote.com. In early July, Banxquote was showing that the best yield on a one-year bank CD was 5.50 percent, while the national average was only 3.73 percent.

The difference is a big incentive to do some real comparison shopping when looking for yield investments. When you drill down to look for yields on bankrate.com, for instance, you'll find that the Internet-based banks tend to offer the high yields, while the big brick-and-mortar banks are offering yields that can be half, or less.
