USAA SAVES MILITARY FAMILIES $$$
With so many families now connected to the military, we thought it was time
to put in a recommendation for USAA Insurance. If you serve in the
military, your parents were USAA members, you are National Guard, in the
Reserves, or recently retired or separated military (within 1-2 years,
depending on situation), then you should be eligible for membership. This
organization limits membership to those military connected, and has rates
that are among the best we have ever encountered. We have heard over & over
again of people who switched their insurance to USAA and saved $100 or more
a year. Plus if they have a surplus at certain times of the year, you may
receive cash back that is based on your premiums & how long you have been a
member. So check them out at... www.usaa.com Or call them at 1-800-531-8111
By the way, we switched to their banking services (1-800-531-2265 ), after
having problems with a local credit union misplacing our paychecks. They
did a great job and all of USAA has a big focus on customer service. POST
IT...near your phone or computer.

5 SECOND RULE
At last, research that is practical. ;-) You've heard of the 5 Second Rule,
where if you drop food on the ground and pick it up within 5 seconds, then
it is probably clean enough to eat (depending on the surface of course, dirt
is not the same as a kitchen floor). Well, two Connecticut College students
decided to test the theory. What they found by using Skittles for dry food,
and apples for damp food, was that it took more than 30 seconds for bacteria
to get on the apple and longer than a minute for the Skittles. However a
high school student who received an award for her research a few years ago,
found that IF the floor was contaminated with E Coli, that it took less than
5 seconds to latch on. To read more about it, go to...

Remember to type in all of the link if it wraps to the next line. POST
IT...in your kitchen.

EVERY FINGER = 15 MINUTES
A recent tip shared on "Man vs. Wild" could be helpful to anyone enjoying
the outdoors. First, DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN AT ANYTIME. Hold one
hand up so it blocks the sun, then hold the 4 fingers of your other hand
(fingers touching, side by side) just below the hand blocking the sun. For
every finger between the blocking hand and the horizon, you have about 15
minutes before the sun sets. Check out "Man vs. Wild" on the Discovery
Channel (currently Sundays 8-10pm) for more survival tips; you never know
when you might need them. POST IT...with your camping/hiking gear.

SECURITYONCAMPUS.COM
With many young people leaving the nest and heading off for college, and
with recent memories of the VA Tech tragedy, obviously school security is on
the minds of many parents and students. First of all, to those already
heading the VA Tech, with their heightened security, this campus will
probably be one of the safest campuses around for some time. Now for those
heading elsewhere, we have a great tool to check out the situations on
campuses across the country. Go to... www.securityoncampus.org Once there
you can click on "Crime Stats" and enter in the name of the college. Once
you find the college entry, you can click on the "Offenses" at the bottom of
the page to see what has been going on in recent years. Keep in mind though
that the data runs at least 2 years behind the current one, and is reported
by the school. But it should give you a picture of trends in threats that
you might want to be on the lookout for. Remember, just because a student
is in a dorm, instead of off campus housing, doesn't make them any safer.
Usually the more people that live in a building, the more threats to
security there are, whether from the people committing crimes, or not being
as careful as they should with locks, windows, etc. POST IT...with college
admission info.

RECIPE: BEST RECIPES IN THE WORLD
Once again, we are recommending a website with many recipes to choose from.
Mark Bittman, host of PBS's "The Best Recipes in the World," has a great
website, where you can check out some of those amazing recipes, or even buy
the book. Go to... http://www.randomhouse.com/broadway/bittman/
Then click on "Recipes" to check them out. Each episode has about 3-4
recipes from a particular region. This might be especially fun to teach the
family about food in other countries. POST IT...on your computer.

BACK ISSUE TREASURE: November 19th, 2003 Issue
(Reviews of Teachers, Book Bags, Finding a Worship Home,& More)
Again, with people starting to head back to school, it's a good time to
check out teacher review sites for college or younger students. If you have
a choice in teachers, then go with the one with better reviews. If you
don't have a choice, at least you will know what to watch for. For example,
if a teacher throws a lot of pop quizzes, then you can prepare for that.
Also, you may find that you can save money, by spending a little more on
book bags. This issue also has a tip on finding a worship home. All this
and more in this great Back Issue Treasure. To retrieve this back issue and
many others, follow the directions below. POST IT...on your computer.

FINAL WORDS

JOKE
Where does a sick ship go?
To the dock (doc). ;-)

QUOTE
"Be patient with every one, but above all with yourself. I mean, do not be
disturbed because of your imperfections, and always rise up bravely from a
fall. I am glad that you make a daily new beginning. There is no better
means of progress in the spiritual life than to be continually beginning
afresh, and never to think that we have done enough."
