Texas helping Ford regain some momentum

Moribund Ford Motor Co. appears to be stirring again.

Although the struggling automaker's sales are still lower this year than last - when it lost $12.7 billion - the company has recorded 10 straight months of sales increases, aided considerably by its Texas dealers.

Moreover, Ford has two fairly hot new products, the Ford Edge (above) and Lincoln MKX crossovers, that are helping reshape the truck-dependent manufacturer. In June, the Edge was the top-selling crossover in the U.S., Ford says.

Pressure on national oil companies is rising

WASHINGTON - The ball is in the court of the national oil companies: Petrleos de Mexicanos, Saudi Aramco, Petrleos de Venezuela, Russia's Gazprom and the like.

World demand for oil is now 86.1 million barrels a day. In seven years, the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects it will be 97.3 million, and by 2030, 117.6 million barrels a day.

Based on what's known about the world's petroleum reserves, nearly all of that extra oil will have to come from countries that have national oil company monopolies.
