Hi Tucan Travellers,

Next time you're on your way to work, elbowing your way through the crowds on your local tube or train, imagine what life would be like if you took a Guatemalan chicken bus to the office every day!

Travelling on local transport in Latin America is the best way to truly discover the unique cultures and ways of life throughout the region. You'll gain an insight into the everyday routines of the locals that other styles of travel simply can't offer. You can practice your language skills with obliging passengers, and you'll definitely be entertained by the various quirks and idiosyncrasies you'll encounter along the way! Travelling with the locals might be cramped and slightly uncomfortable, but staring into the beautiful brown eyes of the smiling Peruvian toddler that's been plonked on your lap makes you realise the Latino way of getting around beats a commute on the tube any day!

This month we take a look at some of the various modes of local transport that you will travel on when you embark on a Tucan Travel Adventure Tour. These small-group tours are designed to immerse you completely in the local way of life and open your mind to new experiences and cultural trends.

Don't miss our deal of the month - Peru! You can get 10% off plus 2 nights of free pre or post tour accommodation or free airport transfers when you book select Peru tours with us this month.

See you in August!

Crowded, chaotic & crazy!
Chicken buses in Guatemala

Chicken buses are colourful local buses in Guatemala that pick up everything from local commuters to livestock. They are a cheap way of travelling around and are incredibly entertaining!

There's no doubt about it - you'll be cramped. And just when you think you can't get any more cramped, more people will pile on. And more. Ladies with baskets of goods to sell will push their way up and down the aisles, but even if you wanted to buy something there would be no way you that you could move your arm to reach your wallet!

The fearless ticket attendants will use any means possible to reach passengers, from clambering over seats to climbing out the window, walking across the roof and sliding through the back door - while the bus is moving. Bus drivers also have their own unique style. Overtaking five cars in front as the blind corner at the top of a mountain approaches is a common practice and one perfected by many drivers at that!

There's no need for bus stops in Guatemala - locals appear at random places along the dusty roads, sometimes completely in the middle of nowhere, frantically waving down the driver (who is, of course, driving at a speed that would make Michael Schumacher proud). There is also no need for a sign on the bus that displays where you're going - drivers' mates will simply hang out the side of the bus yelling out the destination name at passers-by when you come to small towns.

Your bags are stored on the roof, and if you need to change buses they get tossed swiftly across to the next roof. As you are shuffled from one vehicle to the next with no time to spare you can only hope that your baggage is coming with you, as there's no time to turn your head and check. Of course we have never received any tales from our passengers about lost luggage - perhaps some airlines out there need to take a lesson from the Guatemalans!

Travelling on a chicken bus is a great way to meet new friends, get to know the locals and practice your Spanish. Your fellow passengers will want to know everything about you, from where you grew up to why you're not married, and if you have long hair or fair skin you'll definitely be the centre of attention! It is the ideal way to discover what life in Guatemala is all about - and it's definitely an adventure!

First class all the way
Public transport in Mexico

Travelling on public transport in Central America isn't all elbows and kneecaps! In a complete contrast to Guatemala, Mexico's public transport can be smooth, efficient and very relaxing.

Tucan Travel's Adventure Tours travel mainly on first class buses in Mexico. These buses go from one point to another and have scheduled stops. When you buy your ticket you are given a specific seat number which is yours for the duration of your journey. So you are free to sit back, expand your reclining chair, stretch out your legs and prepare for your next destination!

The buses also play videos on board which is definitely a luxury when you're travelling on some of the longer journeys in Mexico, such as San Cristobal to Palenque, and Palenque to Merida. Be prepared to see anything from a Hollywood blockbuster to a classic 1980's art house flick. If your Spanish is up to it you might like to read the subtitles - which are often quite different to the on-screen dialogue!

You won't have to worry about your bags being tossed about from rooftop to rooftop. When you hand over your bags you get an individual ticket for them which you trade in at the end of your journey. Also, on the longer journeys the buses will make regular stops so you can use the toilet and buy snacks.

For a really diverse cultural experience it's a great idea to do one of our combination tours in Central America, such as the Mayan Circle, and experience both the order and the chaos! This will give you an insight into the various modes of public transport around.

Night bus or night club?
Overnight buses in Peru

Tucan Traveller Andrea Matthews would be forgiven for thinking she had boarded a night club and not a night bus when she travelled on an overnight bus from Arequipa to Nazca on Tucan Travel's Andean Experience tour.

"We were all fairly excited and intrigued as this was the first overnight bus journey many of us had ever taken - so we didn't really know what to expect. The seats were really comfortable and reclined so that was great! We had this big panoramic window in front of us that offered excellent views in the early hours of the morning. As the drive began we noticed the presence of the air conditioner slowly increasing and eventually reaching artic temperatures! The driver seemed quite besotted with the novelty of air conditioning, so we didn't ask him to turn it down - we just rugged up with our sleeping bags and beanies!

But more noticeable than the air conditioning was the stereo. Blasting Latino music, it appeared to get louder and louder as the night went on! Just as we'd be drifting off to sleep, a familiar song that we'd have danced to in a club would come blaring through the speakers, so we'd instantly be awake remembering the fun night out! The whole experience was hilarious to say the least - in the end we knew we wouldn't really sleep so we just decided to stay up and join in the fun!"

Bus, taxi, p***, canoe & hike in one day!
Varied public transport in South America

Tucan Traveller Jack Byrne discovered that on our Adventure Tours, the variety of transport is the spice of life!

"Every day we did so many things that it felt like we had been away for much longer than we had. I remember on the second day of the tour we travelled to the Peruvian jungle, and just getting there was an adventure! First we caught a taxi to the airport to take our short flight to the jungle. We then took a scenic canoe ride down the river for a couple of hours to get to our lodge - and after all that went for an afternoon hike!

When we went from Nazca to Pisco I took a flight over the Nazca lines, a sand board and a dune buggy at the Huacachina Oasis, a speedboat out to the Ballestas Islands and buses in between all that - all in the space of 2 days! The whole reason I booked an Adventure Tour was because I wanted an adventure - and I definitely got one!"
