VINCENT ALVAREZ IS THE DC KING OF LOS ANGELES

Vincent, switch 180 nosegrind.
Last Saturday the finals to the DC King of L.A. contest went off at L.A.C.C. as we settled the score and crowned the King: Vincent Alvarez from West Covina. Vincent proved to be the strongest skater of the day, winning the comp on the Wilshire 10 stair replica we made especially for this final.

The finals on the Wilshire 10 was the fourth contest of the DC King of Los Angeles series, with each amateur skateboarding contest held at either infamous L.A. street spots or on replicas of iconic spots. Coming into the finals, we knew the race for the DC King of Los Angeles crown was super tight – there were five skaters who could potentially take the overall win and the $5000 that goes with it! While Vincent was the early favorite to take the DC KOLA crown thanks to a win at the first comp, the competition proved stiff as the next two contests went down, with Pharmacy’s Josh Grossguth eventually taking the overall lead by the end of the 3rd contest, which was held inside Barker Hangar on a Chino 4 Block replica.
The finals scene on the Wilshire 10 replica.
With a tight points race, it really came down to the finals. After the best of the best progressed through the qualifying heats on the street course, we held the finals on the Wilshire 10 stair replica. By the time the extended final was over, the panel of five judges had selected Vincent as the contest’s best, instantly giving him another $650 cash, another G-Shock phone, another iPod Nano, and another 10 points in the DC King of Los Angeles points standings.
Vincent scored a big $5000 check... add that to his winnings from the other comps and he came up on well over 6 G's (plus 3 custom DC iPods).
With wins at the first and last comps, Vincent’s DC King of L.A. point-total summed to 29. Josh Grossguth, with a win at Bancroft and two other strong finishes, also finished with 29 overall points.

A tie in the overall points, but there can only be one DC King of Los Angeles. The judges determined that since Vincent had won two contests (including the finals), he had properly earned DC KOLA bragging rights. Vincent: congratulations on winning DC King of Los Angeles and over $6000 in total winnings.
Danny congratulates Vince.
After the comp at L.A.C.C. we closed out DC King of Los Angeles with a nice party in Hollywood. The DC team was joined by a bunch of L.A. locals and some industry-type peeps for our official send-off to the nearly month-long competition and team trip.

With the box sealed on DC King of Los Angeles, today we posted a “Best of” gallery at www.dckingof.com. As a whole, the photos provide a good recap of the contests and the team’s experiences in Los Angeles, including a few images that will surprise you, even if you’ve been staying up on the daily blogs. 5 QUICK ONES WITH TRAVIS RICE
What’s Travis Rice been up to lately? Well, a heck of a lot more than you, or any of us for that matter. T.Rice has been globetrotting relentlessly as he effectively mixes business with pleasure; one day he’s setting up a signature snowboarding contest back home, then next day he’s in Bali giving toothpaste to a Buddhist. While he was here at DC HQ in San Diego, CA, we got the details straight from Travis:
Rice, clownin' mid-interview.
1. Why are you in Cali?
Basically to score some tasty barrels. It’s really nice just to get to the coast and get a bit of summer. [And,] some of my business partners are located here and so are some of my favorite sponsors, such as DC. I’ve got a lot of projects that I’m working on, so that’s my excuse for being out here.

2. You’re remodeling your house in Jackson Hole. How’s it coming?
You know how remodels go—they take longer and cost more than you thought they would. But it’s going good. It should be finished by the time I get back to Jackson, [which will be] about Christmas time. It’s a pretty hands-on project, but everything is going smooth.

3. We heard you just got back from the South Pacific.
Yeah, I got out of the snow and immediately went to Thailand for a wedding. It was a full Buddhist wedding in the city and eight monks came and chanted for about two hours straight—it was pretty intense but pretty cool. It was funny because we had to pay them for their services but you’d have to give them soap and toothpaste and a deodorant bar because they don’t deal with money because of their free life.

Then I went to Bali for a few days and the surf was extremely epic. Overall it was an enlightening trip—good food, good sun, a little bit of ‘rhea.

4. Where else have you been recently?
I went to Munich to meet with the TTR crew to get everything straight for next year, then I went down to Prague to visit Mike Perillo, the famed artist, to work on my new LIB Tech board graphic. While there we took a trip down to this castle that had grizzly bears in the moat, and also jumped off some cliffs in Communist territory. I also visited the soon to be DC Headquarters in Europe and played a little bit of golf… 36 holes.
5. Where do you go next?
I just got back from a chaotic trip, and I’m about to embark on another one soon. I going to Jackson for some meetings regarding a contest I’m throwing next winter. Then I’m heading down to New Zealand for seven weeks primarily to work on a film we’ve been doing for the last year.

Thanks Travis!
X GAMES 13 IS NEARLY HERE
Kagy, triple medals at X 12. Flatspin 540 double tailwhip.
With summer flying by, we’re surprisingly only weeks away from X Games 13, and like last year DC athletes are all over the invite list. Los Angeles will once again be the host city as the X Games takes over the Staples Center and the Home Depot Center from August 2-5.

Last year, DC experienced its most successful X Games event ever, with the riders taking home a combined 13 medals. Highlights included Danny Way’s third straight Big Air Gold, Travis Pastrana’s Golds in three separate events across two sports, Kagy’s three medals, and a Bronze in Rally Car racing from DC co-founder Ken Block.

This year, in addition to all the other events, we can all look forward to the new Moto X Racing event (inside the Staples Center) and an appearance from Ricky Carmichael, who’s competing in the X Games for the first time ever… the G.O.A.T. is bound to mix things up!

Here, we present the (deep) list of DC athletes invited to compete at X Games 13.

TORSTEIN HORGMO SCORES DOUBLE WINS (SLOPESTYLE AND QP) AT ABOMINABLE SNOWJAM
Guldemond Takes 2nd in Slopestyle
Torstein and Chas get comfortable on the ASJ podium.

DC am Torstein Horgmo has taken not one but two wins – Quarterpipe and Slopestyle – at this week’s Abominable Snowjam at Mt. Hood, a fun summertime contest with big dollars and prizes on the line. He took over $20,000 in winnings (10 grand from each comp) plus got the VOLVO Overall Rider Award, an honor that comes with the keys to a brand new Volvo C30.

Torstein’s DC teammate, Chas Guldemond also podiumed at ASJ, taking 2nd in the Slopestyle portion of the event.

The first win for Torstein happened in the Quarterpipe competition. With the hot sun blazing, riders launched out the top of the two story high QP (22 feet, to be exact). Everyone was going huge, but Torstein took it with a switch back three, back seven, a huge backside air and a Michaelchuk.

With a win under his belt and $10,000 already in his wallet, Torstein went on to take Thursday’s Slopestyle. He sealed the deal running flawlessly through the rail section with tricks like Cab 270 to fakie and switch nose to regular on the down bar, 50-50 through the down-flat-down 360 out, as well as stomping the 3 hit jump line with a FS 1080, BS 9, to Cab 9.

With summer snow in the background, Torstein shows off the new whip.

Chas was right on his tail finishing in 2nd with a solid performance as well, throwing Cab 9, BS Rodeo, to BS 1260 through the jump section. He locked in $5K for himself.

A double win and a double podium? Not a bad summertime weekend for Torstein and Chas! Check out TransWorld Snowboarding’s site for more ASJ coverage.
