It's Official: An Unofficial Delay
Windows Server 2008 won't be coming this year after all.
As the saying goes, you can reliably bet against Microsoft
ship dates. The February 27, 2008 launch date means many
enterprises may further push off Office 2007 and Windows
Vista upgrades.

Channeling Microsoft Hosted Services
Microsoft's misguided channel approach to hosted services
is opening a cleaner, competitive path for Google and other
Web 2.0 companies. Oh, yeah, Microsoft also has set the stage
for major competition with its partners. Can you say, "Channel
conflict?"

Ballmer is the New Gates
Microsoft's CEO is now giving the kind of vision speeches
that defined its chairman and cofounder. The transfer of
power has started, and the vision is "services." During his
keynote at this week's Microsoft partner conference, CEO
Steve Ballmer laid out Microsoft's vision for software as a
service.

Is Microsoft's First Customer You?
This week's partner conference once again raises questions
about who Microsoft really develops its products for. Hint:
It's not enterprises.

Software Assurance Storm Warning
Forrester Research sees a series of customer hurricanes
coming Microsoft's way. If they strike, they could wash
away many Software Assurance contracts. Eighty-six percent
of IT procurement professionals surveyed by Forrester said
that their Software Assurance contract would expire in 2007.
But only 11 percent said they would renew contracts, while
26 percent definitely won't renew. Microsoft could take a
major hit on the bottom line in fiscal 2008 and 2009, if
renewals decline.
