LINUX TO GAIN "COMPLETELY FAIR SCHEDULER"
The next release of the Linux kernel will apparently gain an all-new
scheduler said to deliver better desktop scheduling. Ingo Molnar's CFS
("completely fair scheduler") implements a fair scheduling approach long
advocated by Con "Conman" Kolivas, a practicing Australian medical
doctor specializing in anaesthesia.

GPLV3 ARRIVES WITH LITTLE FANFARE
The FSF (Free Software Foundation) has released GPLv3 (GNU General
Public License version 3), the third generation of the world's most
popular free software license. However, only about twenty open source
projects have adopted the new license so far.

CHINESE SOC POWERS LINUX-BASED NC
A company in China is selling network computers (NCs) based on an SoC
(system-on-chip) of its own design. Beijing Peking University Unity
Microsystems Technology Co. (PKUnity) says its PKUnity NC runs Linux on
a Unity-863 CPU, built around a "self-developed" Unicore32 processor and
Unicore-F64 FPU.

STANDARD LINUX NOW RUNS ON DSPS
A new Linux kernel released over the weekend adds native support for
Analog Devices Inc.'s Blackfin DSP (digital signal processor)
architecture. The Linux 2.6.22 release supports six shipping Blackfin
DSPs, along with several development boards.

IPHONE-LIKE LINUX PHONE READY FOR HACKERS
A project to build an open, user-extensible Linux-based mobile phone has
opened its online store for business. About 1,000 OpenMoko Neo1973
phones are available initially, primarily targeting hackers and
developers, with general availability of a "mass market" phone expected
in October.

LINUX ROBOTS DESCEND ON ATLANTA
Linux-powered robots recently flocked to Atlanta to compete in the
Robocup scientific competition. The eleventh annual event has attracted
at least two Linux-based designs aiming to replace Sony's Aibo as the de
facto hardware platform for standard Robocup league play.

NEW FCC RULES MAY IMPACT LINUX-BASED DEVICES
New U.S. regulations have just gone into effect that could change how
vendors of devices with software-defined radios (SDR) use open-source
software. The new rules could impact manufacturers of mobile phones,
WiFi cards, and other devices that use SDR technologies.

DEVELOPERS DITCHING WINDOWS, REPORT FINDS
Fewer North American programmers are writing software for Windows,
according to Evans Data Corporation (EDC). The market research firm said
that about 65 percent of developers targeted Windows client operating
systems in 2006, down from 74 percent the year before, and likely to
fall another couple of points this year.

LINUX COMPUTER THINKS IT'S A CHIP
A board vendor specializing in military and rugged markets is sampling a
2-inch-square ARM9/FPGA processor module designed to plug into a 462-pin
CPU-style socket. Advanced Knowledge Associates (AKA), says its LM150
comes with a Linux BSP (board support package) and supports applications
requiring custom interfaces.

CORE 2 DUO ALLEGED TO HAVE "NON-FIXABLE" BUGS
Intel's Core 2 Duo processor has "serious, exploitable" bugs, claims
Open BSD founder Theo de Raadt. Posting on a mailing list, de Raadt
further charges that Intel leaves open source operating systems "in the
cold" when it comes to providing fixes.

TORVALDS COMMENTS ON CORE 2 DUO BUGS
"Bugs happen," concluded Linus Torvalds after a discussion of Core 2 Duo
errata on the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML) last week. The pragmatic
iconoclast defended Intel for handling bugs publicly, in contrast to
embedded chip makers that tend to hide chip bugs behind workarounds in
their OS ports.

OPEN SOURCE HA MIDDLEWARE PROJECT TAKES OFF
Motorola says the open source high availability (HA) software project it
launched four months ago has made considerable progress. The OpenSAF
project has achieved an initial 1.0 code release, and Motorola has
started the process of forming an "industry-wide consortium" to steward
the project.

DIY LINUX CELLPHONE COMPONENTS AVAILABLE
A vendor of tiny, Linux-based SBCs (single-board computers) will soon
begin accepting pre-orders for cellular networking and GPS
daughtercards. Gumstix said its "Goliath" daughtercards target remote
data applications such as fleet tracking, as well as "hobbyists who want
to build their own phone."

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS VS. P***T EARTH
Computers, television, and other consumer electronics will soak up
nearly half of the electricity used in British homes by 2020, a recently
released report says. According to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), this
will overtake lighting and refrigeration, previously the largest
domestic power drain.
