Are Your Scripts Protected?
By their very nature, scripts are open to the world. Anyone can see the
code in a text editor. So, if you distribute your scripts, you need to
protect them. Although you can use traditional approaches to protect your
scripts such as encoding or using file- or folder-level security, there's a
better way. You can use DotNetWrapper.vbs. This tool not only encodes a
script but also compiles the script into an executable. You don't need to
rewrite any code in your script.
DotNetWrapper.vbs works with a wide variety of scripts, including .vbs,
.js, .hta, .bat, .cmd, and .htm scripts. Because it uses the Visual Basic
.NET command-line compiler (vbc.exe), you need to use DotNetWrapper.vbs on
a machine on which Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 or later is installed.
In "Make Sure Your Scripts Have Some Protection"
Jason Joy explains how DotNetWrapper.vbs works and how to use it. I've opened
up this article for public viewing so that you can read about and download
this useful tool. The article will be open for public viewing only through
July 22, so don't delay. If you enjoy reading this article, you can get more

Enter the "Reader to Reader Roundup" Sweepstakes
Are your folders full of functions that never fail, routines that you
reuse over and over, and scripts that simplify your job and save your sanity?
Have you ever read a scripting article and thought to yourself, "Hey, I've
written code similar to that, except it...." If so, have I got an offer for
you.
For a limited time, you can participate in the "Reader to Reader Roundup"
sweepstakes. To enter, all you need to do is send me your code and tell me
the story behind it. You don't need to write anything fancy. Just tell me
what prompted you to write the code, what it does, and how to use it. The
code can be written in VBScript, JScript, Windows shell, or PowerShell.
If you participate in this special sweepstakes, you'll be entered into a
drawing. Three names will be randomly chosen; these winners will each receive
a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate. I'll announce the winners of the drawing
in the August 3 issue of Scripting Central.
But wait. There's more. Our technical editors will be reviewing all the
stories and code sent in as part of this special sweepstakes. If they like
your story and the code works as promised, we'll publish your story as a
Reader to Reader article in Scripting Pro VIP. Not only will you and your
code be in the spotlight, but you'll also receive $100.
So, don't delay--send me your story and code today. You don't even have to
pay postage if you email it to R2R@scriptingprovip.com. Just make sure you
send it to me by Friday, July 27.
And now, here's all the fine print that, if it were on TV, would be so
small and scroll across so fast that you couldn't read it:
- Email your story and code to R2R@scriptingprovip.com. Please put
"R2R Roundup" in the subject line.
- The code can be written in VBScript, JScript, Windows shell, or
PowerShell. Please provide the actual code file. To avoid trouble with our
antivirus and spam filters, please place your code in a .zip file or add a
.txt extension to it (e.g., MyCode.vbs.txt).
- Please include your full name and phone number.
- All stories and code must be received by July 27.

File fragmentation is a serious problem. As a disk becomes fragmented, the
workload on the OS and hardware increases. It becomes more difficult for
applications to read and write data, file corruption becomes a distinct
possibility, the user experience degrades due to system performance problems,
and the computer's reliability is endangered. In this white paper, we look at
the effect of disk defragmentation on your users.
