Words WIthout Borders July Newsletter
Dear Friends:
This month the Russians are coming, prepared to carry us off to a new and surprising literary landscape. Mikhail Shishkin pens the letter of the law, while Victor Pelevin keystrokes his way through a Japanese cybersex site. Maria Arbatova abandons a car to market forces; Alexei Parshchikov is mired at an emotional crossroads; and time stands still for Olga Slavnikova's stroke victim. Meanwhile, the young poet Tatyana Moseeva muses on movies and Andrei Gelasimov's single mother flees to France. A big shout out to intern Rohan Kamicheril for his help in discovering these jewels of the new Federation.
Elsewhere in this issue, Uwe Timm's retired seamstress wraps herself in fur and memories, Paulo Britto pens a quasi sonnet, and Massimo Bontempelli bows to a pretender to the throne.
Work continues on our redesign: please do send your thoughts to wordswithoutborders@gmail.com and don't forget to come back early and often to catch new stories as they appear.
On the Bookshelf: Richard McGill Murphy greets Grégoire Bouillier's Mystery Guest, Samantha Schnee peers into Javier Marías's Heart So White, and Harry Morales crosses the border in Jorge Franco's Paradise Travel: A Novel.
Blogs, blogs, blogs: Susan Harris does some (dia)critical thinking and cries Wolff Prize.
Join our ongoing celebration of our first anthology, Literature from the "Axis of Evil": we've now posted the reading guide . Look for the paperback this fall, just in time for classes and book clubs. And check out the site for more on our new anthology, Words Without Borders: The World Through the Eyes of Writers , the book that Kirkus calls "one of the best introductions to non-Western writers there is."
You may now donate to WWB online.
