Born to a once-wealthy family of Mississippi planters, her tragic downfall takes place in the squalid and tawdry French Quarter apartment of her sister (Stella) and animalistic brother-in-law (Stanley). In Williams' own words, the play is about "the ravishment of the tender, the sensitive, and the delicate, by the savage and brutal forces of modern society."
