MULCH PLUS WEED CONTROL
The Preen company has a brand new product out that may be a gardener's
dream. The product is "Mulch Plus" and is mulch that is treated with
something to prevent broadleaf weeds from germinating. So while it won't
kill existing weeds, it should prevent new weeds from growing in your mulch.
However, because it is a new product they are only selling it in limited
areas and only through Lowe's stores the first year. So check with your
local Lowe's to see if they have it available in your area. You can go
to...
www.lowes.com to read more about it, by clicking on "Outdoors," then "Garden
Center," then "Mulch, Bark and Nuggets," then on the Mulch Plus listings.
You can also order it online if they don't have it in your area. POST
IT...on your garden shopping list.

MOSQUITO FORECASTS
What a great idea! The Weather Channel's website has a great feature for
this time of year for those of us who live in mosquito areas. Go to...
http://www.weather.com/activities/homeandgarden/mosquito/
At this site, you can enter in your zip code/city and it will tell you how
active you can expect the mosquitoes to be at various times throughout the
day, and the next evening as well. You can also click on articles to teach
you about mosquitoes, diseases they may carry, and simple tips on how to
control them. While it probably isn't helpful for long range planning, if
you are trying to decide whether to attend an outdoor activity & the
forecast is high, you might want to reconsider or pack the bug spray. POST
IT...on your computer favorites and your calendar.

SAVING ON CELL PHONE PLAN TRANSFERS
Three websites can help you save money on termination fees, if you decide
you'd like to switch cell phone plans. They use an assumption of liability
program. They can help you connect to someone who would like to assume your
cell phone plan. Then they help you notify the companies involved about the
switch, so no sharing of private info with the person who is assuming the
plan. You can read more about it at any of these 3 sites.
http://www.celltradeusa.com
http://www.cellswapper.com
http://www.resellular.com
The cell phone companies are aware of the sites and don't seem to have a
problem with it. POST IT...with your cell phone paperwork or accessories.
By the way, for those who use their cell phones just for emergencies, or on
a rare basis, we are still big fans of Virgin Mobile's pay as you go
programs. Check them out at...

GETTING RID OF BEES/FLIES IN A ROOM
You've had a lot of kids, or maybe adults, going in & out of your house,
leaving the door ajar, or open too long. Now you have a bee/wasp/fly/(fill
in the blank) buzzing around that you just can't seem to kill. Here's a
little tip that may help you get rid of them fast. Most flying insects are
just trying to find a way out of your house anyway. First, find what room
they are in and close off doors to block them into as small an area as
possible. Then in the area where the bug is trapped, open up your windows.
Turn off the lights in the room, so the brightest light will be coming from
the window. Usually, it doesn't take long for the bugs to land on the
window screen. Now you just have to slowly close the window, trapping them
between the window and the screen. Within a day or two, they should have
died on their own. If this method is taking too long, then you can always
try to get a clear glass over them, then slide a piece of thin cardboard (or
an index card) under the mouth of the glass, then take them outside or to
the nearest screen and release. POST IT...with your bug spray. Another tip
we featured in a previous issue, for preventing the problem, is to spray
insect repellant around your door and/or door frame, but make sure it is
safe for the finish of the same.

RECIPE: ANGEL FOOD CAKE VARIATIONS FROM DUNCAN HINES
With more and more people watching what they eat, Angel Food Cake is
becoming more and more popular. With zero fat and only about half the
calories of regular cake, it makes it an attractive alternative. Our
favorite Angel Food Cake mix comes from Duncan Hines (we're fans of their
other mixes as well). A lot of people don't know that you don't have to
settle for a plain Angel Food flavor every time. CHOCOLATE ANGEL FOOD CAKE:
For a chocolate Angel Food Cake add 3 sifted Tablespoons of unsweetened
cocoa to the mix. Then, mix and bake as directed. ORANGE ANGEL FOOD CAKE:
For an orange Angel Food Cake, add 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup of orange juice,
1 tablespoon of grated orange peel and a few drops of yellow food coloring.
Then, mix and bake as directed. Now while they didn't list any other
variations, I wonder, since they used the orange juice, if you could
substitute other juices for flavors. Maybe lemon, lime, grapefruit,
cranberry, or grape? Might be worth trying sometime. If you give a new one
a try, let me know how it turned out. Don't forget that you can use these
variations in desserts that call for regular Angel Food Cake. I think the
orange would go particularly well with the Angel Toffee Dessert in our Oct.
20th, 2004 issue. The plain or variation flavors might also be a good
substitute for the Easy 4th of July Dessert in our featured back issue
(instead of the pound cake). You can also make Angel Food Cupcakes, by
making the recipe as directed, then filling the cupcake pans/liners 2/3
full, then baking at 350F for 12-17 min, remove immediately when
done...makes 30-35 cupcakes. Send me your favorite Angel Food recipes, so
we can share them with our readers. POST IT...in your recipe box under
Angel Food Cakes.

MISSING: Madeleine McCann
While this young girl's case has received a lot of publicity already, I've
had a few readers request we feature her, and if we can help in any way, we
are happy to. Our readers in Europe and in the northern region of the
African continent should be especially watchful. One thing that can almost
assuredly identify her is a split in the iris of her right eye that almost
looks like a dial pointing to the 7 o'clock position if her eye were a clock
you were looking at. You can see pictures and read the latest updates at
the family's website at...
http://www.findmadeleine.com/ The basic story is that her parents, both
British physicians, were at a resort in Portugal and left Madeleine and her
twin siblings alone in their hotel room. About 45 min. after they had
checked on the children, they returned to the room to find Madeleine gone.
That was 2 months ago. If you see a little girl about 4 yrs old, no matter
what color hair (could have been dyed/cut by now), or what country, look for
the split in the iris. It is a very rare thing. POST IT...in your car or
business, esp. if you are in the areas mentioned. Also if you are going on
vacation, take a picture with you.

FINAL WORDS

JOKE (for those heading to the beach for the 4th:-)
A couple lived near the ocean and used to walk the beach a lot. One summer
they noticed a girl who was at the beach pretty much every day. She wasn't
unusual, nor was the travel bag she carried, except for one thing; She would
approach people who were sitting on the beach, glance around, then speak to
them. Generally, the people would respond negatively and she would wander
off, but occasionally someone would nod and there would be a quick exchange
of money for something she carried in her bag. The couple assumed she was
selling drugs and debated calling the cops, but since they didn't know for
sure they just continued to watch her. After a couple of weeks the wife
asked, "Honey, have you ever noticed that she only goes up to people with
boom boxes and other electronic devices?" He hadn't and said so. Then she
said, "Tomorrow I want you to get a towel and our big radio and go lie out
on the beach. Then we can find out what she's really doing." Well, the plan
went off without a hitch, and the wife was almost hopping up and down with
anticipation when she saw the girl talk to her husband and then leave. The
man walked up the beach and met his wife at the road. "Well, is she selling
drugs?" she asked excitedly." No, she's not." he said, enjoying this
probably more than he should have. "Well, what is it, then?" his wife fairly
shrieked. The man grinned and said. "Her name is Sally and she's a battery
salesperson." "Batteries?" cried the wife . "Yes" he replied.

"Sally sells C cells by the Seashore."

QUOTE (Two Quotes Today)
"We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must
insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for
the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the
truth."
~~Al Gore (1948- , former Vice-President of the USA, Author, Speaker,
Outspoken Proponent of Global Warming Theory)

"Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, 'An Inconvenient Truth,'
have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can
show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging
where science has rebutted his claims. Each of these cases provides an
opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the
distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will
tell."

Institute)
