Dear Reader,

Welcome to the last June 2007 issue of Ask The Computer Lady!

July is right around the corner, and I need your help to put
together the July issues. I want to focus on backing up your
computer in July, and I need to know what it is that you want
to learn about backing up your computer!

You can help me out by sending in your backup questions to me
at questions@asktcl.com

I will select the 12 best or most frequently asked questions and
they will be answered during the month of July.

On a personal note, please keep my son, Isaac in your prayers.
He has been serving in the Navy on the USS Carr, and on Tuesday
he fell and shattered his foot. It looks like he will need
several more operations to put everything back together, and he
will have to work very hard to recover enough to stay in the Navy.

I appreciate your thoughts and prayers!

Have a great week,
Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,

I too love your column and learn much from it. Recently I switched
from Earthlink to Embarqmail.com.

Everything seems fine except a neat little service I had on my Home
Page that continuously provided me with birthdates, anniversaries
and other important dates to remember, was lost. (The dates were
all lost as well).

Although I can reproduce the dates, I really liked that they were
always there up-coming dates posted every time I went on line. Do
you know of a similar program out there that would do the same
thing for me? I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

Many thanks, Barbara

Dear Barbara,

While I have not seen what your Earthlink calendar looks like, I was
able to find a nice online calendar at Google:
http://www.google.com/calendar

All you would need to do, is set up an account with Google (If you
don't already have one) and then set up the calendar the way you
want it to look. I put in an upcoming birthday and even was able to
set a reminder to be e-mailed to me one week in advance of the
event every year. (I found the reminder under "Options")

If you want to see this Google calendar every time you go online,
just set it as your home page. Here is how:

Go to the Google Calendar page.

Click on "Tools" in the menu bar, or on the toolbar, then click on
"Internet Options".

On the "General" page of the Internet Options window, locate the
"Home Page" section. It will be at the top of the page.

Click on the "Use Current" button to set the page as your home page.

Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the page to save your
changes.

Dear Computer Lady,

How do I block spam that is sent to me in picture form?

For example, I have set up message rules in Outlook Express to
delete messages with the word "Vi**ra" in either the subject or
the message body but now these smart spammers don't use the
word in the subject and they don't type any text. All the text
has been put in the message body in a picture block. (It is not
a jpg. attachment.) Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you,
Barb

Dear Barb,

There is nothing worse than opening your e-mail, only to find
yourself looking at a horrible picture! It has happened to all
of us one time or another!

I use a great spam filtering program called Spam Sleuth
www.asktcl.com/spamsleuth.htm which filters out 98% of the junk
mail that comes to my account, but I also use one more trick to
reduce my chances of looking at something I don't want to see.
I simply set my e-mail program to view all messages in plain
text.

1. To set This up in Outlook Express, click on "Tools" in the
menu bar, then click on "Options".

2. In the "Options" window, click on the "Read" tab and then put
a check mark in the box that says "Read all messages in Plain
Text".

3. Click "OK" to close the window and save your changes.

1. To set this up in Microsoft Outlook (part of MS Office) click
on "Tools" in the menu bar, then click on "Options".

2. In the "Options" window, click on the "Preferences" tab and
then click the button near the top right corner of the window
that says "E-mail Options".

3. In the "E-mail options" window, click to put a check mark in
the box that says "Read all standard mail in plain text".

4. Click "OK" in the "E-mail Options" window and click "OK"
again in the "Options" window to save your changes.

Dear Computer Lady,

By mistake, I managed to save a document that shows up now as my
template every time I open Word. How do I correct this problem?

Thank you, Yasmeen

Dear Yasmeen,

Somehow in the process of saving your file, you saved it as a
template named normal.dot. This is the file that Word uses to load
a new blank document. In some versions of Word, this is easy to do,
while in others it is harder, but not impossible to do. I actually
come across this problem several times a year.

To fix this, all you have to do, is delete the file, normal.dot. The
next time you open Word up, it will look for the file, and if it
does not find it, will create a new, blank one.

The hardest part is finding the file.

Make sure you do not have Word open and then, click on "Start", then
on "Find" (or Search) and "Files or Folders"

Click on the "Name& Location" tab and in the box labeled "Named"
type the name of the file you are looking for, "normal.dot"

In the "Look in" section, make sure it says (C:) and make sure there
is a check mark in front of "Include subfolders", then click "Find
Now".

When the file, normal.dot shows up in the results box, just right
click on it, and click Delete.

Now, open Word again and it will automatically create a new blank
template.

Elizabeth

My name is: Cherryl
I am from: BC Canada
My message: I get great tips from your news letter that I often
share with our winter computer group - there was one it this week's
letter giving advice on thumb/flash drives - you forgot to tell her
the SO important part about the safe removal of the drive - I would
have added that before you remove it you click on the small
external storage device icon on the notification bar, bottom right
of desktop, then on the 'Safely remove USB mass storage device"
Wait to remove it until the "Safe to Remove" message appears
Thanks Elizabeth

Dear Cherryl,

Thank you for reminding me of that important step. If a person
tries to remove the drive while it is being written to, the data
could become corrupted.

Elizabeth
