World War II in Color

Because it occurred just before color television and photography became the
standard, most of what we have seen, studied, and learned about World War
II has been in black & white. This fascinating website breathes life into
the visual history of the Second World War, with colorful images that
capture one of the most pivotal conflicts in our modern history.

"WW II in Color" is a gallery of color photography and video footage that
presents the war in a more modern context, as opposed to the faded black
and white images often found in common History books. Some of the most
gripping imagery on the site is from films and photos recently
de-classified by the U.S. Government, as well as the gallery of German,
Italian, Russian, British, and Japanese photos. Visitors can also download
photos, read about the history of color photography, and browse through the
"Homefront" collection of images on the American civilian effort.

Obscure English Words

Philologists and lexicographers will love this wordy website, which is
dedicated to preserving thousands of lost and obscure English words. The
name of the site is Luciferous Logolepsy, which can be paraphrased to "an
illuminating obsession with words", contains over 9,000 obscure English
terms and definitions.

Wordsmiths can scroll through the site's substantial archive of esoteric
English words, which thankfully are listed alphabetically for easy
browsing. While there are so many great forgotten and abandoned words to
discover here, highlights include "obsolagnium" (waning sexual desire due
to age), "scaphism" (death by being covered in honey and left in the hot
sun), and "deipnosophist" (a skillful dinner conversationalist).

The Museum of Hoaxes

Welcome to the Museum of Hoaxes, a website dedicated entirely to the
unsavory art of deceptions, cons, schemes, dodges, humbugs, and
hoodwinks. The site, which has been running steady for a decade, examines
"dubious-sounding claims and mischief of all kinds" throughout history.

Check out the site's different sections such as "Tall Tales", "Famous
Hoaxes", "College Pranks", and the "Top 100 April Fools". Don't miss such
classics as H.L. Mencken's fictitious "Tale of the Tub", "The Case of the
Miraculous Bullet", and the many hoaxes of legendary poet and author Edgar
Allen Poe.
