Wine House - Old & Rare Wines
Newsletter
Thursday 21st June, 2007
Dear Criss,
We are a bit calmer this week after the frantic going's-on last time
around. The waiting list status of our Clarendon Hills
dinner and the success of the Saturday tasting were bound to
help.
The
wine of the week comes out of the previous weekend's Grant
Burge - Flagship tasting and it's their, surprisingly very good,
sparkling pinot noir/chardonnay. Something to relax with.
Relaxation continues
with a Blending Wines theme for this Saturday Tasting.
It will be fun chance to play with wine and see why we blend two
parts to make a whole.
Fire places are also a good place to relax and Bass Phillip pinot
noir is a good wine to sit down with, even next to a radiator if
the open fire is bricked in. Have a look at our list below.
And we can not forget
the Wine Trivia. A
$30 wine gift voucher or $30 Lunch Special is on offer, but
there is no rush to get your answer in, remember the prize often
goes to best dressed not first in.
Enjoy,
The team
at Wine House
Wine of the Week
Grant Burge Sparkling Pinot
Noir Chardonnay NV
Barossa Valley, South Australia
"Ready to Roll." - James Halliday.
Last weekend was an
outstanding tasting with people coming from all over, even as far as
Shepparton and Canada, to join the food and wine experience.
While all of the wines were of high calibre, our wine of the week is
the one whose quality surprised us the most. Barossa Valley is not
know for its sparkling whites, generally the sun and soil is too
warm, but the grapes for this wine are sourced from higher altitudes
and it provides more elegance and finesse than you might expect.
Still this is not a
delicate sparkling. While there are traces of citrus, practically
lime, there are big nougat and apricot flavours that meld in with
nice honey biscuit characters too.
It is a top drinking
bubbly, at a terrific price point and, as James Halliday described
it, this is one bottle "Ready to roll".
$21.56 in a dozen | $23.95 per bottle
Bass Phillip
Gippsland, Victoria
Around Australia Bass Phillip
is recognised as being at the top of the pinot noir tree. The wines
are revered, sought after and, like much we stock, rare. We are
always proud of our wine stocks but sometimes we just feel like
gloating and the list of Bass Phillip we have is something to gloat
about. Have a look at just a few of the bottles you can enjoy.
Bass Phillip Village
Pinot Noir 2004
Gippsland, Victoria
Jeremy
Oliver 90 points!
I know we have mentioned this wine a few times in the newsletter but
it is a really top pinot noir. Rustic and earthy this is wine that
drives people to spend hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours
searching for obscure Burgundy producers. We wonder why when we have
an outstanding crafter right here in Victoria's unsung Gippsland
area. Very much worth the taste.
$40.50 in a dozen | $45.00 per bottle
Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2004
Gippsland, Victoria
Jeremy Oliver 91 points!
Welcome to the next level of Bass Phillip.
Imagine sitting by a rain soaked window in your warm lounge as
"...layers of red cherries and blood plums backed by dusty, nutty
oak." (Jeremy Oliver) unfold out of your glass. That is what makes
the next level a great step for Bass Phillip wines.
$71.10 in a dozen | $79.00 per bottle
Bass Phillip Premium
Pinot Noir 2001
Gippsland, Victoria
Jeremy Oliver 93 points!
The third class in pinot noir made at Bass Phillip is sometimes seen
as the better of the top end two. This wine is "an essay in what
pinot noir is all about" according to Jeremy Oliver (OnWine) and
it can not be more simple than that.
$220 per bottle
Bass Phillip
Reserve Pinot Noir 1991
Gippsland, Victoria
Jeremy Oliver 95 points!
The top floor of Bass Phillip pinot noir is a serious step up and
descriptions are almost useless for a wine in this echelon. If you
are familiar with the wine pedigree and quality then their is no
need for descriptions or contemplation. We have just one bottle.
$380 per bottle

Wine Trivia
Last week's question
was...
"Five miles from
Perpignan upon the foot hills of the Pyrenees there is a sweet
desert wine consisting of Muscat and Malvoisie. What is this wine
referred to as?
There were some good answers, many of
which we're close but not close enough. The voucher or lunch goes to
Alistair this week and you can see the name of the spot by clicking
on this link:
A bottle of the
trivia answer is
available on the store now.
This week we ask:
Which
two adventurers used a clause in the Duffy Land Act of 1862 to take
up land at a place called Tabilk,
what were their names
and how did they source their cuttings?
For your chance to win a
$30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old &
Rare Wines, email your correct answer to

Extra
consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct
replies are received in a short time period.

If you
send your wine orientated question in to us and we publish it, you
will receive
a $30 Lunch Special at the
