Buggy Safari Belies Apple's Promise
Although Jobs promised that Safari would be secure from day
one, it didn't take researchers long to poke the new browser
full of holes. The problems include denial of service
vulnerabilities and remote code execution flaws. Another
security researcher called Safari "pathetic", while a third
found command execution vulnerabilities. Check out our story
for details on the problems found - it's a good thing Safari
is only in beta!
Apple Misleads Mac Gamers
Die-hard gamers with a predilection for Apple PCs have been
in a quandary these last few years. Almost none of the great
PC-based games have been ported to the Mac. But Apple claims
that will all change now, and even had Bing Gordon from EA
on stage at the Developers Conference. Does this mean native
ports? Alas, not. Apple seems to have deceived its customers
yet again. Find out more in our story. Oh, and if you'd like
to see the Leopard highlights from Jobs' keynote, check out
our greatest hits video. It has it all, in less than three
minutes.
YouTube Readying Copyright Checker
It's been a puzzle for a long time - how can Google's youTube
division keep its users from posting copyrighted material?
Big video companies are up in arms, yet the flood keeps on
saturating YouTube. Finally, though, the big search company
has announced that it will trial a video-fingerprinting
technology that should solve at least some of the problems.
Find out more in our story.
Bluetooth Embraces WiBree for Low Power
It's not for headsets, but the new ultra low power Bluetooth
will enable a new class of sensor networks that talk to each
other. Poised to compete with Zigbee and Z-Wave, this new
low power networking technology promises to use just 10% of
the power of existing Bluetooth. When will it be available?
What will it be used for? Our story has the answers.
Pictures: How a Motherboard Is Made
On his recent trip to Taiwan, one of our reporters stopped by
a motherboard factory to see just how the core parts of our
PC are actually made. The results might surprise you! It's
not as automated as you might think. Our story has narrative
describing the process, and a slide show that details exactly
what happens. And when you get to the end... Yum, Egg Yolk Pie.
Well worth the read.
Huge New Hard Drives Coming from Western Digital
It's hard to imagine a one and a half terabyte drive. But now
you don't even have to imagine, you can actually buy one. OK,
it's not cheap, but I'm amazed by how large hard drives have
become. Our story has the details on when these huge drives
will be available, and how much they'll cost.
Great Add-Ons for Those Empty Device Bays
I just built a super cool Dual Core PC, inside an Antec case.
That case has a couple of 5.25" drive bays, yet I'm only using
one for a CD/DVD drive. The others are just sitting empty. No
more, though, because we just pulled together a round-up of
cool devices that use those drive bays to add things like
multimedia card readers, hard drive enclosures, system
information displays and much more. Check out our round-up
for details on all the things you can do with that drive bay!
Why Myspace, Twitter and Second Life Will Die
These hot and highly touted new web sites and services have a
lot of buzz. And the more hype they get, the more they grow in
apparent size and power. But they're all junk, says Lance
Ulanoff, and they'll all be mostly gone from the web world in
a few years. Why is he so down on those sites? Check out his
analysis for details.
Yahoo Exposes Gmail Mail boxes
It's a neat idea. Now you can see your Gmail inbox on your My
Yahoo page. But execution is everything, and here's where Yahoo
fell down. Apparently you can see other people's gmail on your
page, and it's possible that your mail could be exposed to
others. Better read our story and find out of you're at risk -
along with reading the details on why Yahoo would make it easier
for you to use Gmail.
