- Tip of the Month

This month's tip is a pretty basic one, but is still one that a lot of
RootsMagic users aren't completely familiar with based on tech support
requests we get.

Have you wished you could change which person is on the screen when you
first start up RootsMagic? Or have you ever been working in a remote area
of your database and wished you could make it start with a person in that
area automatically the next time you start the program?

The answer is setting the root person in your database. RootsMagic assigns
one of the people in your database as the "root person". The root person
is the person that will initially come up when you start RootsMagic, and is
also the person that RootsMagic goes to when you press the Ctrl+Home key on
one of the main screens.

There are a couple of ways to set the root person, but the fastest and
easiest way is to right click on the person on one of the main screens, and
then select "Set as root person" from the pop-up menu that appears.

So if there is a particular person you want as the start up person, right
click on them and set them as the root person.

Likewise, if you are in a remote area of your database, and are ready to
shut down for the night, simply right click on one of those people and set
them as the root person. Then when you start back up next time, that
person will automatically come up as the starting person so you can pick up
where you left off. When you are done, just set the starting person back
to yourself or whoever you normally have as the root person.

more effectively, visit our message boards at:

- New in the RootsMagic Store: Evidence QuickSheet

If you own Elizabeth Shown Mill's book Evidence!, you may have noticed that
it doesn't have much information on citing sources that you find on the
internet.

Elizabeth has created a 4 page laminated folder called "QuickSheet: Citing
Online Historical Resources" which provides a template for citing
historical sources on the Internet. It also lays down rules to help you
judge the reliability of these sources.

The QuickSheet contains a series of sample citations showing the correct
way to identify online sources such as databases, census images, and
digital books and articles. Convenient for desktop use at home or in the
library, the QuickSheet answers all those niggling questions left
unanswered by the standard citation guides; it is also a perfect companion
to the classic citation manual Evidence!.

The QuickSheet is now available in the RootsMagic store for $5.95, and for
a limited time the shipping is free. To order the QuickSheet, visit:

- User Group News

DENVER, COLORADO
DATE/TIME: 11 JUNE (MONDAY), 7PM
PLACE: Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2300 S. Patton Ct., Denver
This Monday night June 11, 7pm, will be our last Roots Magic meeting until
next fall. This will be a workshop meeting. They will have a brief
Internet search spot, a short business meeting, then we will break into our
respective groups. I will have my computer and program available and as a
group we will cover any of the RootsMagic program subjects that you have
questions on. Once again it would be nice to work over the summer on a
branch of your family putting it in book form to share with us next fall.
In October we will be doing a symposium comparing our program with other
programs and examples of your books would be nice to have.

There are a number of RootsMagic user groups around the US (and several
outside the US), and there are also users who would like to start up user
groups in their area. To find out if there is a user group in your area
(or if one is starting up), or if you would like to help start a user group
in your area, visit:

http://www.rootsmagic.com/usergroups.htm

If you are involved with a RootsMagic user group, and would like us to
mention upcoming meetings in our newsletter, just visit:
