McSweeny's Internet Tendency

Recognized by "PC Magazine" as one of the Top 101 Classic Websites of 2006,
this site will inspire you with its excellent writing, scathing humor, and
creative posts and contests. Officially named "McSweeney's Internet
Tendency", the website is part of a growing stable of virtual, DVD, and
traditional publications being put out by McSweeney's, a publishing house
founded by New York author Dave Eggers.

McSweeney's.Net is a virtual treasure trove of top notch writing, a
literature and humor website that is a favorite amongst the many creative
souls surfing the Web. While there is too much cool stuff on the site to
mention, highlights include "The Convergences Contest", "Dispatches from
Iraq", great Food Reviews, and the always amusing "McSweeney Recommends".

from Abaza (a difficult Caucasian language spoken by roughly 45,000 people
in the Russian autonomous republics of Karachay-Cherkessia) to Zulu (one of
the official languages of South Africa that is spoken by 9 million people
primarily in Zululand). In addition to the extensive index, language
lovers can find information on ancient alphabets and un-deciphered scripts,

SHORT TAKES

Presidential Humor

Even his staunchest supporters admit that George W. Bush is a President
prone to verbal blunders and awkward moments. "LOL President" is a
hilarious blog that does not limit its presidential lampooning to our
current leader, but is bi-partisan in its ribbing of past
Commanders-in-Chief including Nixon, LBJ, Taft, Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert
Hoover, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and "Bush 41".

Religious Literacy 101

Test your theological knowledge by taking this quick online quiz, courtesy
of the Biblical Studies blog "Codex". The quiz has fifteen questions
related to the Old and New Testaments, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, the
answers to which are hidden at the bottom in "amazing
selecto-vision". Good Luck!

Famous Missing Fingers

Unfortunately, many people have lost digits to machinery accidents,
childhood pranks, carelessness, and birth defects. This site celebrates
people who, despite missing a finger or three, have been extremely
successful. Notable names to make the list include Jerry Garcia
(wood-chopping accident), Boris Yeltsin (childhood grenade accident),
outlaw Jesse James (while cleaning his pistol during the Civil War), and
astronaut Donald K. "Deke" Slayton.

Guide to the Gods

The rise of Religious Extremism, the recent influx of books on Atheism by
scholars such as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, and the ongoing
Presidential Debates have once again put Religion on the forefront of the
our cultural consciousness. This recent increase in public discourse about
Faith is nothing new however, for you need only look to history to see that
Religion has played a powerful, constantly evolving, and unfortunately
quite violent role in nearly all human societies.

Godchecker.Com, undoubtedly one of the holier websites on the Internet,
takes a light-hearted and educational approach to teaching people about the
thousands of deities that have been worshipped by humans over the past
millennia. The site's Mythology Encyclopedia has a wealth of theological
information on almost three thousand "Gods" from the ancient pantheons of
Aztec, African, Australian, Finnish, Greek, Incan, Mayan, Roman, Native
American, Chinese, Middle-Eastern, Norse and many other civilizations. In
addition to all of this historical info, check out some of the cool
features such as "Mythmatics - The Mythology of Numbers", and the God Shop,
where visitors can buy mythic mouse pads, "sacred" clothing, hats, magnets,
and much more.

Your Child's Health

Although there are scores of books that claim to have mastered the subject,
there is truly no "manual" for new parents. And while many aspects of
parenthood can only be learned through experience, caring for your child's
medical needs is something that all parents should be completely prepared for.

This useful website, created by The Children's Hospital of Seattle,
provides adults with practical health and safety information about children
of all ages. Parents can access instant health advice and valuable
guidelines to follow when their child gets sick, read crucial information
about Prevention and Immunization, and get tips on addressing the many
challenges that face teenagers such as Obesity, Drugs, Stress, and School
Violence. There are also sections on the website exclusively for "Teens"
and "Kids", which can be a positive medium for educating children about
many of these issues instead of them having to hear it from "their parents".

Credit Card Prank II

Those of us who have credit cards tend to use them frequently, and have
therefore signed literally thousands of times on the dotted line. The
second installment of the original "Credit Card Prank", a popular stunt
from Zug.Com, demonstrates that despite recent advancements in security
credit card companies still don't seem to notice if you decide to get a
little creative with your signature.

Visitors will find the new "Credit Card Prank" just as entertaining as the
original, which was viewed approximately thirty million times. Memorable
sign-offs include the name "Shamu" written aside a drawing of a whale
(while buying tickets at The New England Aquarium), the words "Not
Authorized" (purchasing an expensive TV at Circuit City), and various
occasions when the Zug "Prankster" experimented on those new electronic
credit card machines. Thanks for shopping!

The Art of Origami

Origami, as its name literally translates to in Japanese, is the "art of
paper folding". Although technically originated in China, it found its
ultimate home in Japan in the 6th Century when Buddhist Monks brought paper
to the territory. American artist Robert J. Lang has spent more than
thirty years practicing Origami, and is one of the only Westerners ever to
master this unique structural art form.

Mr. Lang is known for his complex and intricate design style, which
combines the traditional Eastern method of "line and form" with the modern
Western approach of mathematical Origami design. Browse through the
gallery of his work, discover the history of Origami, and read about the
artist's role in pioneering Mathematical and Computational Origami. If you
are inspired to do so, you can begin learning this ancient form of
sculpture which so elegantly combines paper, art, math, and science.

Baseball Almanac

For baseball fans across the country, the summer is not about warm weather
and beach vacations so much as it's about double-headers, hot dogs, 7th
inning stretches, and the All-Star Game. Truly die-hard baseball junkies
will want to bookmark this website, which is the ultimate online resource
for all things related to America's national pastime.

The Baseball Almanac is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the
game, and boasts the digital equivalent of three hundred-thousand pages of
facts, records, statistics, quotes, essays and other baseball-related
information. Browse through the various sections including "History",
"Players", "Leaders", and "Left Field", then check out some of the cool
features such as the "Baseball Fever Polls" and the aptly entitled blog
"Around the Horn".
