ASUS UNVEILS ULTRA-LOW-COST LINUX LAPTOP
Yet another inexpensive miniature flash-based laptop running Linux has
appeared. Asus Chairman Jonney Shih introduced the $190 Eee PC (3ePC) at
a Computex keynote this week, giving the audience a tour of its
Windows-like Linux operating system, which boots in 15 seconds from 2GB
of flash.

VIA DEBUTS TINIEST MOTHERBOARD YET
Via CEO Wenchi Chen revealed a business card-sized motherboard billed as
the "world's first industry-standard form-factor for PC/phone
convergence," at Computex this week. The "mobile-ITX" board measures 3 x
1.8 inches -- half the size of Via's "pico-ITX" form-factor -- and runs
Linux or Windows XP Embedded.

$100 LINUX GADGET BECOMES STUDENT TESTING DEVICE
LearningSoft has used customized Linux-based handheld devices in an
"assessment system" aimed at helping classroom school teachers create,
administer, and score tests. Aimed primarily at grades three through
eight, the "Indigo Learning System" uses Aeronix's $99 Zipit chat device
running a custom software stack.

APPLE-TV TO RUN LINUX SOON?
Apple's Apple-TV (A-TV) is based on a more-or-less standard Intel PC
architecture, according to an in-depth "under-the-hood" analysis.
Additionally, a community project has already reported success in
getting a Linux kernel and various device drivers to operate on the
platform.

VIA UNVEILS "ULTRA MOBILE DEVICE" REFERENCE DESIGN
Via Technologies on June 6 unveiled the NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device
(UMD) reference design -- a UMPC-like device, but with a full QWERTY
keyboard. The "sub-notebook" style design aims to enable device-makers
to build customized low-cost, light-weight mobile PCs for consumers,
businesses, and schools.

GPLV3'S DEVICE-RELATED LANGUAGE EVOLVES
After two years of work by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and the
open source community, the GNU General Public License Version 3 (GPLv3)
is due on June 29. The "final draft," released May 31 for comments,
persists with "anti-TiVo-ization" language, although the scope is
narrowed to consumer devices only.

REPORT QUESTIONS "MOBILE OFFICE" MARKET POTENTIAL
Shortly before Palm unveiled its "Foleo mobile companion", market
research firm 451 Group released a report questioning the potential for
"mobile office" devices such as smartphones. The Group estimates that
only 20 million smartphones currently ship each year, with volume
unlikely to grow much beyond that.

Technical books publisher O'Reilly has released a "cookbook" full of
bash shell scripting examples. The Bash Cookbook offers numerous

PMP DOUBLES AS PERSONAL LINUX DESKTOP
Asian Linux distributor TurboLinux has announced the "global launch" of
its combination PMP (portable media player) and Linux boot device. When
plugged into a PC, the "Wizpy" player launches users into their own
localized, personalized Linux-based operating system environment.
