| ATLANTA RETAIL HOTSPOTS Exploring Buckhead, Part I: Lenox Square It’s been dubbed the shopping mecca of the Southeast. The Beverly Hills of Atlanta. The Lexus nexus of conspicuous consumption. And for good reason: Within its 28 square miles, Buckhead—Atlanta’s premier city-within-a-city—boasts more than 1,400 retail units (most of them upscale) and $1 billion a year in sales. About 350 of those retail units are housed in two high-end malls just a block or so apart—and two blocks away from the InterContinental Buckhead. Both are owned by Simon Malls, and both have directories that read like a who’s who of retailing. |

The larger of the two, Lenox Square, will unveil in August its fifth major addition since its debut in 1957 as an open-air mall. Anchored by Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Neiman Marcus, Lenox houses nearly 250 specialty stores brimming with design and merchandising inspiration, including Anthropologie, The Apple Store, Betsey Johnson, Hermes, Hollister Co., Kate Spade, Kenneth Cole, Kiehl’s, Louis Vuitton, Nicole Miller, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Salvatore Ferragamo and Urban Outfitters. Check out The Art of Shaving, a Manhattan-born, 17-store chain with 10 openings planned for 2007. The Lenox store balances elegance and masculinity in a narrow space, and features the brand’s signature old-fashioned barber chair used for hot-towel shaves on weekends. Another growing chain devoted to skin care, Bare Escentuals is oh-so feminine, from its pink and magenta color scheme to the fanciful ceiling mural, chandelier and delicate scent in the air. |

The new Nike Women store is dotted with custom-content, digital media screens, but the real show is the design: white flooring and flocked, damask-style wallpaper funkily patterned with deer heads, alligators, mustangs and athletic figures. In contrast, the Oakley store directly across the mall is done in cool black and gray, brushed metal, and custom fixtures and lights for an industrial, power-plant feel.
