Six Schools to Join Ministry's Eco-Project
As of January 26, 2007, The Japanese Ministry of the Environment has
selected six new schools as model schools in fiscal 2006 for its "Eco-
Renovation of School Buildings and Environmental Education" project,
which provides eco-education in schools and communities through ecology-
conscious renovation of school buildings.

New Canon Printer: 83% of Components Reusable
Canon released an eco-friendly model of its office-use multifunctional
color printer, "iR C3200N-R," on February 7, 2007. The model is largely
composed of reused parts, accounting for 83 percent of its weight.
Applying advanced recycling technologies to used components under strict
quality controls, Canon has succeeded in maintaining comparable levels
of reliability and performance in this model as in products made of new
materials.

Toppan Printing Selected as One of World's Most Sustainable Corporation
Toppan Printing Co., a major printing company in Japan, was recognized
as one of the "Global 100: Most Sustainable Corporations in the World
2007," it was announced on January 29, 2007. This is the first time a
company from the Japanese printing industry has been selected.

Tsuyama Waterworks Generates Electricity from Drinking Water
Odanaka water treatment plant in Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture has been
generating hydroelectric power since January 16, 2007. This is the
seventh case of producing electricity from the water supply in Japan,
and the first in the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyusyu regions in the western
part of the country.

Secretariat of Montreal Process Relocates to Forestry Agency of Japan in
Jan. 2007
The Japanese Forestry Agency announced on January 12, 2007 that the
Secretariat of the Montreal Process, an international framework for
sustainable forest management, had been transferred to it from the
Canadian Forest Service as of January 1, 2007.

Japan Can Reduce CO2 Emissions by 70% by 2050: Report
On February 15, 2007, the 2050 Japan Low-Carbon Society project team
released an interim report on its achievement, concluding that Japan has
the technological potential to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2),
one of the major greenhouse gases, by 70 percent from 1990 levels and
still have a well-off and advanced low carbon society.
