MICROSOFT, PARTNERS DEBUT IP TELEPHONY DEVICES
Microsoft and nine device manufacturers introduced 15 phones and devices
that support Microsoft's "Unified Communications" platform, this week at
WinHEC 2007. The new devices, including Windows CE-powered standalone IP
phones from Polycom and LG-Nortel, aim to "connect the workplace phone
to email, instant messaging, real-time presence information,
conferencing, VoIP, and mobile communications." Here are two news items

WINDOWS MOBILE 6 POWERS "SLEEK" PDA/PHONE
Motorola unveiled a handful of new handsets on May 15, and reintroduced
a Windows Mobile device that it previewed in February. The Moto Q 9,
running Windows Mobile 6, couples a "sleek" form-factor with support for
HSDPA/UMTS wireless broadband downloads at up to 3.6Mbps.

VEHICLE COMPUTER ASSISTS WITH PUBLIC SAFETY
Glacier Computer has introduced a rugged vehicle computer aimed at
public safety applications. The "Magnum" is based on a 1.4GHz Celeron
processor, features a 12-inch, sunlight-readable touchscreen display,
operates over -30 to 80 degrees C and withstands 30 G's of vibration,
and offers multiple wireless options.

SAMSUNG ENHANCES ITS Q1 UMPC
Samsung on May 7 unveiled the second generation of its Q1 family of
ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs). Among its enhancements, the Q1 Ultra series
introduces a unique split-QWERTY keypad, increases display resolution to
1024 x 600 pixels, reduces weight to 1.5 pounds, and adds fingerprint
security.

THIN CLIENTS SAVE ENERGY, SPARE CO2
Using thin clients instead of conventional PCs would lower energy
consumption by 51 percent and reduce CO2 emissions, concludes a recent
study by the Fraunhofer Institute. The study, whose results were
announced today by Igel Technology, compared thin clients manufactured
by Igel to conventional business PCs.

SOFTWARE SPIES ON WINDOWS MOBILE SMARTPHONES
Retina-X Studios has introduced a call and messaging activity-monitoring
service for Windows Mobile smartphones. "Mobile Spy" enables employers,
parents, or other suspicious people to monitor SMS (Short Message
Service) text messages and call details online in real time.
