A.V. Club Picks |
| This Week in A.V. Milwaukee | ||
| Summer in Wisconsin is like having sex for the first time--you wait a really long time for it, and when it finally comes it's over much too quickly. The summer of '07 should be no different. Milwaukee's calendar is packed
tight with festivals, block parties, concerts, and various other events to get you in the mood, so to speak. To help with the commencement of summer lovin', The A.V. Club has devised its own Kama Sutra: The Blue Skies summer guide. Inside you'll find all you need to know about what to
do for the next three months. It helps to be organized with so much going on--you might even have some time left over to cuddle. This Thursday is shaping up to be a mini-Summerfest of its own--no less than four marquee-worthy attractions are setting up camp in Milwaukee, including Fall Out Boy, Kings Of Leon, The Hold Steady, and George Carlin. If standards are relaxed a bit, you could throw Five For Fighting in there, too. Out of that bunch, The A.V. Club is debating whether to check out The Hold Steady's victory lap behind 2006's beloved Boys And Girls In America at Miramar or catch Kings Of Leon's sweaty live take on the recent Because Of The Times at The Rave/Eagles Club. It's choices like this that make summer in Milwaukee seem so fleeting. Let's get it on. | ||
| Thur., May 17, 8pm | Kings Of Leon + Snowden | |
|
|
Kings Of Leon won't likely outgrow the well-deserved "Southern Strokes" tag that greeted them upon arrival, but a few more albums like Youth & Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak could make it irrelevant.
The former pricked up a lot of ears back in 2003, when the shaggy Southerners rolled up with greasy guitar riffs and songs that tip toward car-blasting classic rock. Aha Shake Heartbreak was hornier and Stonesier--is that redundant?--but Kings Of Leon's glammed-up take on alt-country still
flashed a regional badge. April's Because Of The Times takes an even bigger leap forward, stretching out song lengths, toying with vocal effects, and generally shaking up expectations. Kings picked an odd but excellent opener in Snowden, an Atlanta outfit whose 2006 debut Anti-Anti is
a stark, idiosyncratic disc that may well be the apotheosis of dance-punk, even as it shuns most of the cliches of the genre. Opening: Philpot.

| Sat, May 19, 10pm | Testa Rosa + Knit Delicate at Club Garibaldi | |
|
|
The self-titled debut from Milwaukee's dreamy pop trio Testa Rosa came out earlier this year but sounds like a lost alt-rock gem from the early '90s. Singer-songwriter Betty Blexrud-Strigens definitely has a Tanya
Donelly/Kristin Hersh thing going on, delivering strong yet vulnerable vocals that will have hipster boys swooning. Stay back, fellas--Testa Rosa is rounded out by husband Damian Strigens as well as Paul Hancock, the same core that formed the defunct modern rock band The Mustn'ts in the mid-'00s.
Another local music veteran, Charles Jordan was a singer and guitarist for the '80s band The Nerve Twins (which also included Damian Strigens). Lately he's been busy running the Foundation bar in Riverwest, but after several years of woodshedding he's back with a solo project called Knit Delicate
and a new record, Pressed, featuring one perfect power-pop song--the summer anthem-in-waiting "Bright Summer Sun"--and many others that come within spitting distance. Also playing: The Pugilists.
