COMING SOON: "UBUNTU MOBILE AND EMBEDDED"
This week saw news that Canonical, the commercial parent of the
increasingly popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, is readying a version
of its distribution specifically for mobile and embedded devices.
Contrary to rumors, however, the new version of Ubuntu will target
"mobile Internet devices" (MIDs), not mobile phones (at least

SUN BEAMS LINUX/JAVA AT MOBILE PHONES
Sun Microsystems announced at JavaOne this week that it is developing a
"pre-integrated," GPL-licensable, Linux- and Java-based operating system
software reference design specifically for mobile phones. "JavaFX
Mobile" targets multimedia-enabled phones, and is the first of several
planned media-oriented "JavaFX" branded stacks.

MORE CELF-CON PRESENTATIONS EMERGE
Most presentations from the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF)
conference held Apr. 17-19, 2007 in Santa Clara, Calif. are now
available at the CELF WiKi. The event featured 52 deeply technical
presentations, many describing original kernel development projects
aimed at improving Linux for use in devices.

LOW-COST, ECO-FRIENDLY COMPUTING DEVICE RUNS LINUX
A New York City based start-up is readying a silent, low-cost,
Linux-based computing appliance said to burn an order of magnitude less
power than traditional PCs. The Zonbu Zonbox runs Gentoo Linux and two
dozen open source applications on a Via C7 processor clocked at 1.2GHz.

AUTOMATION CONTROLLER COMES WITH LINUX
Artila Electronics is shipping a passively cooled ARM9-based system
targeting applications such as industrial control and building
automation. The Matrix-520 is based on a 180MHz Atmel SoC
(system-on-chip), includes lots of I/O ports, and comes with an open
Linux development environment and a stout metal case.

GPS-ENABLED RUGGED PDA RUNS LINUX
Indian device design house iWave Systems has unveiled a "military grade"
PDA that supports SDIO WiFi and GPS receiver modules. The
"iW-Rugged-PDA" is based on a Marvell PXA270 processor, and can run
Linux or Windows CE, the company said.

MOZILLA'S FIREFOX STRATEGY INCLUDES MOBILE PHONES
The Mozilla Foundation is working to adapt the Firefox browser to mobile
devices, such as Linux-based phones, according to an APCMag interview
with Mozilla CEO Winifred "Mitchell" Baker. Baker said the company is
also investigating mobile content services with a server component,
similar to Opera Mini.

ULTRA-COMPACT CORE 2 DUO SYSTEM SUPPORTS LINUX
Hong Kong-based mini-PC manufacturing specialist SD-Omega has launched a
new system claimed to be the smallest Core 2 Duo PC to support both
Linux and Windows Vista. The SD635 is based on an Intel 945GM/ICH7M
chipset and measures 6.2 x 10.1 x 2.2 inches

CELLULAR M2M MODULE VENDORS STRUGGLE DESPITE BOOMING MARKET
The market for cellular radio modules that target M2M
(machine-to-machine) communications applications will grow from 18
million units in 2006 to 90 million units in 2012, forecasts ABI
Research. However, commoditization and shrinking margins make for an
"extremely difficult market" for module vendors, the market research
firm said.
