From the Editor
There's so much cool new stuff to cover this issue that it's hard to pick a top story, so I'll do this scientifically and toss them in a hat, and ... Silverlight gets the nod to lead off, even though we mentioned it in the last edition. The new news is that the Silverlight Beta 1.0 version is now available for download with a "Go-Live" license that allows developers and designers to use Expression Studio and Visual Studio to create commercial Silverlight Web experiences. See first-hand how you can deliver media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web that incorporate video, animation, interactivity, and stunning user interfaces, using existing skills and tools.
Speaking of Visual Studio, you now can find fun, simple tools for hobbyists, students and casual developers in the Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" Express Edition Community Technology Previews. Now available for download, the "Orcas" Express Edition CTPs enable casual developers to rapidly create Windows and Web applications.
Also available now for download, Windows Server "Longhorn" Beta 3 is available through the MSDN Evaluation Center. Once you register for the software, you'll receive technical resources to assist with your evaluation with every edition of the MSDN Flash. And as part of the Windows Server "Longhorn" beta release, Microsoft has shipped Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Beta 3 as part of the Windows "Longhorn" Server Beta 3 release. IIS 7.0 is the biggest release of IIS in the history of the product, and brings major improvements to the Microsoft Web-server stack.
