One of the quickest and cheapest ways of promoting your website and
increasing the number of links pointing to your site is to submit your
site to web directories.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of web directories that accept both
paid and free submissions and it's worth spending some time --
especially for a new website -- submitting your site to a few of the
more important ones.
