INTEL DEBUTS LINUX-BASED "MOBILE INTERNET DEVICE"
Intel unveiled a new post-PC computing form-factor based on embedded
Linux this week, at its Developer Forum in Beijing this week. The chip
giant projects a global market of 180 million units annually by 2010 for
"Mobile Internet Devices" (MIDs), which are conceptually similar to
Nokia's N800 tablet.

RED FLAG MIDLINUX SCREENSHOT GALLERY PUBLISHED
Australian tech news site APC Magazine has published a photo and

INTEL LAUNCHES MOBILE DEVICE CHIPS, ROADMAP
At its Developer Forum in Beijing this week, Intel confirmed it is
shipping an "ultra mobile" chipset for ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) and
"mobile Internet devices" (described above). It also claimed to be
sampling a second-generation mobile processor based on 45nm silicon and
"High-K" metal gate transistor technology.

LINUX POWERS $50 WIRELESS MESH ROUTER
A Google-backed start-up that began as a doctoral thesis at MIT has
started selling ultra-low-cost mesh networking equipment based on
Atheros WiFi radios and embedded MIPS 4KEc processors running Linux.
Meraki defines its mission as "bringing Internet access to the next
billion people."

SERVER DEVICE DEEMED "BEST LINUX-BASED PRODUCT"
A small, ARM-based Linux server appliance has received a glowing review,
to say the least, over at Linux.com. Excito's "Bubba" server makes
running and managing a home server easy and fun, according to reviewer

REPORT FROM THE EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE 2007

STARTUP TOUTS VIRTUALIZING MICROKERNEL
An Australian think tank has spun out an embedded and real-time
operating systems company headquartered in Chicago. The spin-out --
"Open Kernel Labs" (OK Labs) -- is shipping a commercially supported,
BSD-licensed "OKL4" microkernel that runs Linux and other guest OSes in
user space, targeting devices such as mobile phones.

SUN ACQUIRES JAVA-BASED MOBILE PHONE OS
Sun Microsystems announced that it is acquiring the assets of SavaJe
Technologies, whose claim to fame is a Java-based embedded operating
system that was shown running in a mobile phone at JavaOne last May. The
deal could potentially place Sun -- whose Java technology resides in
hundreds of millions of mobile phones already -- squarely in competition
with the major mobile phone OS players: Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Linux.

MOBILE TV CONSENSUS EMERGING IN EUROPE?
Eleven large, influential European companies are backing a mobile TV
implementation they say could "speed up large scale mobile TV
deployments in Europe." The Broadcast Mobile Convergence (BMCo) Forum's
implementation profile of OMA BCAST requirements enables fast,
interoperable, future-proof implementations, the Nokia-led group says.

INTEL UNVEILS NEW XSCALE SET-TOP BOX CHIP
At its developer forum in Beijing this week, Intel unveiled its first
SoC (system-on-chip) specifically targeting digital set-top boxes (STBs)
and media recorders. The Intel CE 2110 is based on a 1GHz XScale core,
and is shipping to early customers now, along with Linux-based
development and reference design kits.
