I'm working this week away from my usual digs. It's my first time in this particular locale. Luckily I brought along a GPS navigation unit -- a handy little device. While it should be navigating me out for a day of fun I'm here in the room... editing.
Speaking of geography and handy items, one of this week's Open source zone articles is entitled "Create geographical plots of your data using Perl, GD, and plot-latlong." It demonstrates how to build hybrid plot-latlong, Perl-GD maps, and freely available geocoding services to create custom plots of geographical data. In other words, you can build your own customized maps -- even if you don't have a lick of artistic ability.
While you're checking out this article -- and the other
great Open source content for this week -- try your hand at plotting my location. That's right, we're holding the first-ever contest in the history of the developerWorks Open source zone newsletter: From Where Did Mark Write This? Here are my coordinates according to the GPS device: Latitude 22.22741 North and Longitude 159.47434 West.
What is my current street address?
The lucky reader whose correct answer I receive first will win (queue "The Price Is Right" music)... a fabulous, authentic developerWorks or alphaWorks gimcrack or gewgaw. I can't promise it will be as handy as a navigation system, it will have a logo on it. Good luck!
Until next week, Mark Cappel, Open source zone editor
