WINDOWS EMBEDDED GROWTH STRONG IN EMEA POINT-OF-SALE MARKET
Shipments of PC-based electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) equipment in the
EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) market increased by four percent in
2006, IHL Consulting Group reports. Windows Embedded shipments,
meanwhile, grew robustly, with WEPOS (Windows Embedded for Point of
Service) and Windows XP Embedded shipments up 54 and 45 percent
respectively.

WINDOWS CE WEBCAST AVAILABLE FOR ON-DEMAND VIEWING
A recently aired Microsoft webcast aimed at Windows CE "multimedia
device" developers is now available for on-demand viewing. The webcast
explains how to efficiently grapple with technologies such as Digital
Rights Management (DRM) and digital video playback and recording using

OTA DTV STANDARD TARGETS MOBILE DEVICES
The non-profit group defining the over-the-air (OTA) digital TV tuner
standard now mandatory for U.S. TVs has announced plans for a
"mobile/handheld" standard. The Advanced Television Systems Committee
(ATSC) hopes its ATSC-M/H (mobile/handheld) standard will help
broadcasters deliver video and data content to handheld devices, laptop
computers, and fast-moving vehicles.

PANEL PC AIMS WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED AT FORK LIFTS
Noax Technologies has introduced Windows XP Embedded support for its
family of rugged panel PCs which target mobile vehicles such as
forklifts, cranes, construction equipment, and freight carriers. The
"Mobile PC" devices combine an embedded PC with a touch-screen display,

TINY CPU MODULE DOES .NET MICRO FRAMEWORK
EmbeddedFusion has released additional details on the CPU module that
powers its Tahoe Development Kit for .NET Micro Framework (MF)
development. The Meridian CPU integrates a Freescale i.MXS processor,
RAM, flash, and power supply into a surface-mountable component less
than 35 square mm.

USING .NET MICRO FRAMEWORK WITH FREESCALE'S I.MXS KIT
With the growing interest in Microsoft's .NET Micro Framework (MF), a
number of vendors have released development kits aimed at helping

WINDOWS MOBILE "PHONE APP" GROUP SEEKS INPUT
Within the Microsoft Windows Mobile team is a group responsible for the
"phone app," the application code used to make and manage voice calls.
The group is trying to understand how developers currently use the phone
app, or would like to use the phone as a platform.

SUMO ROBOTS TO COMPETE AGAIN AT MEDC
One of the highlights of Microsoft's upcoming Mobile and Embedded
Developers' Conference (MEDC) is expected to be the Sumo Robotics
competition. This year's competition features a new robot architecture
based on an off-the-shelf robotics platform coupled to a single-board
computer running Windows CE 6.0.

ZIGBEE MODULES IMPLEMENT LOW-END MESH
Digi subsidiary MaxStream unveiled a next-generation ZigBee wireless
communications module series at the Embedded Systems Conference last
week. The 2.4GHz XBee Series 2 implements full mesh networking with
self-discovery and self-healing capabilities, in addition to basic
ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 functions for low-end wireless sensor networks.

INITIATIVE TARGETS COM EXPRESS INTEROPERABILITY
Three embedded hardware vendors have launched an initiative aimed at
improving interoperability among COM Express modules and carrier boards.
Adlink, Ampro, and Congatec invite other module vendors and system
integrators to join their "COM Express PNP" (plug-and-play) initiative,
which has already published extensive documentation, including a free
implementation guide.
