The happiest of Easters to all who celebrate it! Though the proverb runs "Natale con i tuoi e pasqua con chi vuoi," Christmas with the family and Easter with whomever you please, Most Italians celebrate the Holiday with their families, and it's an occasion for the far flung to gather. I wish all a happy, safe Easter.

In the Spotlight
La Pasqua Napoletana
One of the richest Italian Easter traditions, with hearty soups, many kinds of lamb, and to finish up, La Pastiera, a sumptuous Neapolitan wheat berry pie.

La Pasqua Romana
Easter brings to a close the three most important days of the Catholic year -- days of prayer and fasting, which were also marked by the marvelous smells of the preparations for Easter dinner. In Roman homes pizza ricresciuta would glow on the dining room table, awaiting the blessing of the priest, but nobody was allowed to taste. Small wonder children greeted Easter morning with joy!

A Very Different Easter Vigilia
Or, what we prepared the year we had Don Luciano, the priest who married us, baptize daughter Clelia during the midnight Service. Foods light enough to forestall sleepiness, and good too!

Top Picks - Favorite Italian Cakes and Pies  from your Italian Cuisine Guide
Italy has hundreds of cakes, sweets, and other delights. Here's a selection of my favorites, some traditional and others quite newfangled. The one characteristic they share is that they don't require a spoon.

1) On About: The Greek Orthodox Easter
It falls on a different day, and there are a number of other different traditions too.

2) In Italian: Pasqua Dolce Pasqua
Sicilian easter traditions are quite beautiful, and very rich too.

3) More in Italian: L'Agnello Pasquale di Favara
Favara is a Sicilian town known for the skill with which the pastry chefs work pasta reale, what is known in the English speaking world as Marzipan. Come Easter, they shape it into lambs that are most beautiful.
