Dear Reader,
Greetings from snowy Maine! That's right, it is April 5th, and
we are in the middle of a snow storm that is supposed to leave
6 to 10 inches of snow before it is done.
I love living in Maine! *grin*
Have a great week,
Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,
Hi! Your newsletter is very helpful to me as I am a computer novice.
Thanks for the great and usable info.
My Question is about Adobe Acrobat reader. I have the 7.0 version. I
use it to open and read files on the web. Also, my insurance
company send me correspondence this way. I've never had a problem
opening and reading it until now. Now, when I click on the pdf file
I want to read, it goes to a blank screen and says done at the
bottom. It seems like this problem started after my husband
downloaded an older version of Adobe without realizing it. I
removed it using the file manager, but I am still not able to view
pdf files. Any ideas?
Thanks, Deanne
Dear Deanne,
You are right, the problem is probably related to installing an
older version of the program. Let me suggest a solution that should
work.
The first thing you will need to do is go to the Control Panel and
un install all the versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader that you find
there.
Once you have removed all the versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader, you
will need to reboot your computer, and then you can install the
newest version. Here are the steps you will need to follow.
1. Open the Control Panel by clicking on "Start" and then click on
"Control Panel".
2. Once in the "Control Panel", click (or double click) on "Add or
Remove Programs" to open it. You might have to wait a moment or two
for the list of installed programs
3. In the "Add or Remove Programs" window, find all the versions of
Adobe Acrobat Reader and one at a time click on each program, and
then click on the "Remove" button to un-install the program.
4. Once all the versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader have been removed,
close the "Add or Remove Programs" window, then reboot the computer
by clicking on "Start", then "Turn off Computer" and then click on
"Restart".
5 When your computer has started back up, go to adobe at www.adobe.
com and download then install the latest version of Adobe Acrobat
Reader. If you are not sure how to download, you can follow my
illustrated tutorial at:

Dear Computer Lady:
I have been receiving e-mails with pps attachments, and I cannot
open them. How do I add this to my Outlook Express???
I really appreciate your newsletters. They have been very helpful.
I hope you can give me some information on this question. Thank
you very much.
Mary
Dear Mary,
Files that end with the letters pps are power point files. All you
need to do is download and install the free Power Point Viewer from
Microsoft. You can download that viewer here:
http://tinyurl.com/5y728
If you are not comfortable downloading files, just use my
illustrated tutorial at:
http://www.asktcl.com/tutorials/download.html
Microsoft provides the PowerPoint Viewer for users who don't have
Microsoft PowerPointR; it allows them to view PowerPoint
presentations.
You can use this viewer to view files created in both PowerPoint for
WindowsR and PowerPoint for the Macintosh.
You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them in
the PowerPoint Viewer.
If you want to be able to create and/or edit Power Point files but
can't afford to purchase Microsoft Office, check out OpenOffice.org.
You can purchase Open Office with a year of tech support for $47.00

Dear Computer Lady,
Really appreciate all your fantastic instructions & hints.
When I copy & paste a portion of your newsletter into a 2003 Word
Document that I have created, it stays the same size horizontally
and I have to manually go to the end of each line & click on delete
to bring up the following line of text in order to fill in the page;
rather than have all the text on the left side of the page.
I have tried to correct this with Tools, Options, Edit Tab,
Unchecked box for "Use Smart Paragraph Selection;" but that didn't
work. I have XP.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Larry in Hitchcock, TX
Dear Larry,
I can relate, I used to spend lots of time removing line breaks at
the end of each line of e-mail messages and I did it exactly the
way you described.
The reason you are having this problem is because I format my
newsletters to have each line be 69 characters long. This makes it
display correctly in almost all e-mail programs. Even if I did not
break the lines at 69 characters, most e-mail programs will
automatically break the lines before you read the message.
I now remove and insert the line breaks with just two clicks on my
mouse using a program called ClipMate.
To remove line breaks, I simply copy the text, then click on my
ClipMate icon in the system tray to open the program. In the
ClipMate Window, I click on the icon for removing line breaks (you
can also click on "Edit" and then "Remove Line Breaks") and can see
the results right in the ClipMate window.
The only thing I need to do after that, is paste my information into
my document.
It's that easy!
You can purchase ClipMate for $34.95 at: http://tinyurl.com/kgyc4
If you want to try it out first, you can download a trial version at:

Dear computer lady:
I need your help. I clicked on your link to get to your web site.
Got there OK decided I wanted to make a shortcut to my desktop for
easy access.. I must of click something that I shouldn't have for
what ended up on the desk top was a copy of your side border with
nothing printed on it just the border.
Thought I would just right click and delete but it don't give me the
option to delete it. So now I have the border across my desk top
that I don't find a way to remove it. Can you help?
Will appreciate your reply ASAP. Thank you, S.
Dear S,
This was a new one to me, I didn't even know that you could put the
background from a web page as your desktop background just by right
clicking.
I did a little bit of experimenting, and learned that you probably
right clicked on my web page and then clicked on "Set as
Background". This copied the background from the web page to be the
background for your desktop.
What you should have clicked on was "Create Shortcut". That would
have put a shortcut to my web page on your desktop.
To correct this problem, all you need to do is the following:
1. Right click on a blank spot on your desktop, and click on
"Properties" in the menu that appears.
2. The "Display Properties" window will open. Click on the "Desktop"
tab at the top of the window.
3. On the "Desktop" page, you will find a list of available images.
Click on them one at a time until you find one that you like, and
then click "OK" to save your changes.
