Permax Pulled
The US Food and Drug Administration announced that manufacturers of pergolide drug products, which are used to treat Parkinson’s disease, will voluntarily remove drugs from the market because of the risk of serious damage to patients’ heart valves. Permax is being withdrawn as well as two generic versions of pergolide manufactured by Par and Teva. Pergolide is in a class of medications called dopamine agonists and is used with levodopa and carbidopa to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Permax was approved in 1988 for Eli Lilly. Ketek Worldwide
The European Medicines Agency is recommending restricted use and strengthened warnings for Sanofi-Aventis SA's antibiotic Ketek. The move follows similar restrictions announced by US regulators last month. The agency has prohibited its use for patients with a rare auto-immune disease and given strengthened warnings of other side effects for all patients. Ketek, known generically as telithromycin, already comes with a warning for possible liver damage. [FORBES]

Stent Study
A recent study revealed that angioplasty does not save lives or prevent heart attacks in non-emergency heart patients and gives only temporary relief from chest pain. Stents are metal mesh tubes placed in arteries during angioplasty, which is done to clean out clogging. The landmark study found that the little devices do not help prevent heart attacks or death in patients with stable coronary artery disease. [PIONEER PRESS]

Risky Antibiotic
The US Food and Drug Administration warned that the use of Zyvox to treat patients with catheter-related bloodstream infection may be linked to an increased risk for mortality. Pfizer’s Zyvox or linezolid was linked with an increased risk for death compared with other antibiotics such as vancomycin, oxacillin, or dicloxacillin. Zyvox is approved in the US to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including pneumonia and skin infections. [REUTERS]

Mother’s Beef
A new study suggests that low sperm count in men is strongly linked to their mothers beef eating habits while pregnant. Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York looked at the relationship between semen quality and risks due to growth hormones and other chemicals in beef and found that mothers who ate beef at least seven times a week had sons with the lowest sperm counts. The study found that 18% of men with beef eating mothers has sub-fertile sperm counts while only 5% of men with minimal beef eating mothers had sub-fertile counts. [BLOOMBERG]

Disruptive Daycare
The largest long-term study of child care and development conducted in the United States found that keeping a preschooler in a day care center for a year or more increased the likelihood that the child would become disruptive in class and that the effect persisted through the sixth grade. The study by the National Institutes of Health discovered subtle vocabulary and behavior problems in children who attended day care, but also note that parenting quality was a much more important predictor of child development. Adding Years
Food enriched with specially developed proteins could add at least 10 years to human life span. Biochemists believe heavier and more stable isotopes can protect the molecules that make up the body and may prevent the damaging effects of oxidizing free radicals. The accumulation of free radical damage is thought to be one of the chief causes of aging. the scientists suggest using isotopes in animal feed so that humans could absorb age-defying isotopes indirectly in steaks or chicken fillets. Healthy Pizza
US researchers claim to have found a way to make pizza healthier by increasing antioxidant levels in the dough. Chemists at the University of Maryland revealed that longer fermenting and baking times for pizza dough can increase the amount of antioxidants to slow and prevent development of cancer and heart disease. Fermenting wheat dough for two days increased antioxidant content by as much as 60%, while higher temperatures increased antioxidants by up to 82 percent. [BBC NEWS]

Mercury Limits
Health Canada has set a standard for the maximum amount of mercury allowed in six species of ocean fish. Shark, swordfish, tuna, escolar, marlin, and orange roughy will not be allowed on store shelves if they contain more than one part per million of mercury. The department is still stressing the nutritional benefits of eating fish and recommends eating 150 grams of fish each week. However, women who are pregnant and breast feeding mothers should cut fish consumption to 150 grams a month. [GLOBE AND MAIL]

Sick Smoking Performance
Two new studies reveal that smokers have poorer job performance and take more sick days than their non-smoking colleagues. One study found smokers took an extra 11 days off compared to non-smokers. As well, smokers tend to be less educated and have lower incomes. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world, claiming one in 10 adults, and the fourth-most-common risk factor for disease. [FORBES]
