Poisoned Pet Food
The FDA announced the voluntary recall of dozens of brands of pet foods for both dogs and cats made by Menu Foods Inc. The recall affects all of the "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food, both in cans and pouches. These private-label pet foods were sold in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Hundreds of reports of animal sicknesses and deaths are being reported. A banned rat poison may have caused the deaths of cats and dogs. Aminopterin was found in pet food samples from Menu Foods. Delayed Cut
A recent study from McMaster University suggests delaying the clamping and cutting of the umbilical cord to enhance the baby's health. A few extra minutes of maternal attachment may give newborns months of significant health benefits and researchers are urging doctors not to cut umbilical cords immediately after birth. Late clamping allows more blood from the cord and the placenta to flow into the infant, raising iron levels and decreasing the risk of anemia in the first weeks and months of life. [TORONTO STAR]
Sunbed Scare
A recent study by the Interrnational Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that people under the age of 35 who use tanning beds increase their risk of melanoma by 75 percent. In general, men and women who had ever done indoor tanning were 15% more likely to develop the deadly skin cancer. Researchers believe the heightened risk may be due to the fact that most indoor tanners do not use any sun protection. [MSNBC]
Overprescribed Antibiotics
Data collected from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey suggests both acute and chronic sinus inflammation (sinusitis) are being over treated with poorly chosen medications. The report discovered that 83% of acute sinusitis and 70% of chronic sinusitis doctor's visits resulted in a prescription for an antibiotic. Inhaled steroids were prescribed more frequently than published studies imply is necessary. [MEDICAL NEWS TODAY]
Pure C Only
A study from the Harvard School of Public Health suggests increased intake of vitamin C from natural food may help reduce the risk of oral cancer. Vitamin C from dietary sources, but not supplements, was associated with a 52% reduced risk of oral cancer. Researchers do not know why supplements showed different effects than fruits and vegetables, but other parts of the food, aside from the vitamins themselves, or the interactions between foods in the diet, may be responsible. High Fat Risks
A recent study from the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health looked at more than 188,000 post menopausal women and discovered high fat diets seemed to increase the likelihood of breast cancer. Women who got 40% of their calories from fat had about a 15% - 32% increased risk of developing breast cancer compared with women who got 20% of their calories from fat. The study also revealed that women with raised levels of blood sugar faced significant extra risks of suffering cancers of the pancreas, skin, womb and urinary tract. [WEB MD]
Fifteen Minute Fix
Just 15 minutes a day of running around might be enough to keep children from becoming obese. British and US researchers found that kids who exercised more were less likely to be obese and that short bursts of intense activity seemed to be the most helpful. Children who did 15 minutes a day of moderate exercise were 50% less likely than inactive children to be obese. [DAILY MAIL]
Wart Duct
Duct tape has been touted and used for years as a cheap and painless treatment for warts by irritating the skin and stimulating the body's immune system to attack the virus that causes warts. However, researchers from the University of Minnesota found that transparent duct tape only worked on 21% of test subjects and helped no more than moleskin. Warts are harmless, stubborn bumps on the hands or feet, caused by a type of papillomavirus and they usually clear up on their own within two years. [HOUSTON CHRONICLE]
Unscientific Degree
A leading pharmacologist condemned science degree courses in alternative and complementary medicine as pseudo scientific and anti-scientific. The University College London professor notes that homeopathy is much more like religion than science and that the practice has barely changed since the beginning of the 19th century. The professor believes degrees in complementary and alternative medicines are harmful because they lead patients to believe that they are being treated by a scientifically trained practitioner. Legal and Illegal Drugs
According to a recent British study, alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous than some illegal drugs such as marijuana or ecstasy. Researchers from Bristol University suggest reclassifying harmful substances based on the actual risks marked by the physical harm to the user, the drug's potential for addiction, and the impact on society of drug use. Alcohol and tobacco would be among the top 10 most dangerous substances. [WASHINGTON POST]
