Mary was angry. She was losing her husband to divorce. Why?
Lack of money--the debt was out of control. Hurtful things
were said. Her relationship with her husband declined and
never recovered. It's sad, really. But not uncommon. Not at
all. Did you know over 70% of marriages that end in divorce
are due to financial difficulties. If your marriage is suf-
fering because of a high debt load, you need to do something
about it NOW. Not tomorrow. Not next week. If you wait any
longer, you may be bankrupt, divorced or both. My name is
Clint Holland. I've developed a system that anyone can use
to pay off all their debt, including the mortgage, in just
3-5 years--without bankruptcy, debt consolidation, or any
unethical tactics. Will you let me help you? Member BBB.

Ten Reasons to Use a Cash-Only Spending Plan
by April Borbon
You'll wonder why you ever fell into the credit trap
Are you in debt? Have you got into the vicious cycle of using
credit to purchase things you need today only to find that
after you pay your credit card bills you have no money to buy
gas/food/necessities, which causes you to use credit again to
see you through the rest of the month?
While using cash only (no credit or debit cards and using
checks only for bills that need to be mailed) may seem
drastic, here are ten good reasons to make this change:
- You are forced to learn money management skills. Using
credit doesn't teach you to manage your money, it teaches you
how to juggle your bills. With cash only, you need to plan in
advance for each day/week/month. If you buy a new coat and eat
out four times this week, will you still be able to afford gas
to get you to work next week?
- You will learn the value of a dollar. With credit or debit
cards, a quick swipe will get you a $4 latte and you won't
even notice the money you have just parted with. With a
hundred dollars on hand for this week and a need for gas,
groceries and allowances, every dollar counts.
- You will get creative. If your daughter's birthday is coming
up and you have limited cash, there is no end to the creative
steps you will take to give her a wonderful birthday. Excess
"stuff" around the house? eBay it for extra cash. Have $100
for this week's groceries? Go meatless for a few meals, end up
spending $80 instead of $100, and then put the $20 you just
saved towards a special present. Left over wrapping paper? It
can become confetti, streamers and decorations for the party.
Creativity can be more valuable than money.
- The difference between "needs" and "wants" will become
apparent pretty quickly. How many times have you "needed" to
eat lunch out? Do you find that you "need" high-end cosmetics
whenever you pass the department store counter? Is every
clothing purchase a "need"? With a limited amount of cash,
your needs will line up quite nicely. You need gas. You need
basic food stuffs. You may need eyeliner since yours is
resembling a stubby pencil but do you need the $30 liner when
you can buy basically the same product at Wal-Mart for $5?
- You will stop the vicious cycle of credit card debt. First,
you will have stopped using your credit cards and therefore
stopped generating more credit card debt. Second, while having
a limited amount of cash will lead to some (possibly) drastic
spending cuts, at least each payment made to your creditors
will pay down your debt instead of making room for more debt
to pile up.
- You will become a consummate shopper. Shopping with a
limited amount of cash forces you to stretch every penny. You
will learn to compare prices, cut coupons, maybe make a price
book, look for alternatives, buy on sale, use rebates, search
out discounts and basically get the most possible out of each
dollar spent.
- You will learn to determine what you need and not fall for
the contrived "needs" generated by advertisers. Billions of
dollars are spent each year to separate you from your hard-
earned money. By making you feel deserving, inferior, or just
not quite as good as you could be, advertisers convince you to
spend your hard-earned money on quite a bit of expensive,
frivolous stuff.
- You will be giving your friends, family and especially your
children a reality check. Living an extravagant life based on
credit card spending is not reality. Instead, it's a fairy
tale. Unfortunately, there is no White Knight to save you from
impending financial disaster. Living a cash-only lifestyle is
reality.
- You will actually save money. Aside from a few perks that
come with using a credit card, unless you pay your balance in
full each month, you are losing money to interest charges and
worse, over limit or late fees.
- You will be in charge. Using credit puts you at the mercy of
creditors and lenders. They set the interest rate, they set
the payment rate, and they send reports to the credit bureaus.
Paying with cash allows you to be in charge of your finances.
There is no doubt that switching to a "cash only" spending
plan is hard; the first few months will probably be the worst.
However, with a positive attitude and a large dose of
creativity, you will wonder why you ever fell into the credit
trap.
Take the Next Step:
Remove the credit cards from your purse or wallet and put them
in a desk or dresser drawer

Arts on a Shoestring

Culture without the cost
Ever want to visit a museum or take in a play, but the price
of the tickets was just too high. There are several ways to
cut costs for the truly motivated.
When it comes to actually buying tickets, you can go as a
group for the group rate, go on a matinee day, or take
advantage of a senior citizen discount.
If the prices are still too high, there are several ways to
get around that too. Many live theatres, operas, and ballets
offer rush or standing room only tickets. After everyone has
bought tickets and is seated, you're allowed to go in and sit
in the empty seats. If the original ticket holder shows up at
intermission, you have to find another seat. I've actually sat
in $120 season ticket holder seat for only $8.
An even cheaper option is to volunteer at the Arts Center of
your choice. Did you think they paid the ushers? It also gives
you a chance to see new performers you might never have seen.
I've volunteered for years, and at the most, I only miss the
first five minutes of the show.
Don't feel like volunteering, but don't want to shell out cash
either, try preview nights. These nights were designed for
teachers planning field trips before the actual opening
performance. Many teachers arrived with their whole families
and a few neighbors too. Some theatres allow you to attend
dress rehearsals free of charge. Museums often have one day a
week or month that is free. You need to call to ask when it is
because this will vary.
If none of these ideas appeal to you, then you can try winning
tickets. I actually got very good at this by putting the local
radio station on speed dial. I also kept the radio on while I
was at work. Unfortunately, they always mentioned my name on
the radio, so I had to back off calling, which means more
chances for the rest of you.
Take the Next Step:
Call your local theatre and ask about volunteering as an usher
and premier nights

My Story: Shop at Home
contributed by Carrie
Taking inventory of what you really have on hand
Recently, I had to be homebound for a few weeks. I was a bit
worried about how I would get my usual groceries and household
supplies. Plenty of friends offered to help me out, but while
it is fine to ask a friend to pick up eggs at the grocery
store, asking for a giant-sized box of laundry detergent seems
more of an imposition. While home, I decided it was a good
opportunity to clean out some closets and take stock of what I
really needed.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered ten packages of vacuum
cleaner bags! Some had fallen from the shelf to the back of
the closet so I'd just kept buying them. I also found two
boxes of dish detergent I'd put on a high shelf and forgot
about. I found I had five half used bottles of cough syrup
strewn around the bathrooms and linen closet.
I found two brand new sets of sheets I'd put away for company
two years ago! I found packs of unopened pens and books of
half used stamps (some 37 cents so you know those weren't
bought last week). I unearthed a nearly full box of blank
checks (I'd just re-ordered thinking I was out).
Now I am not someone who squirrels things away. I am just a
very busy working person who makes lists (when I have time)
before shopping and rarely has time to clean closets. If
anyone told me I had so many things (and especially new,
unused items) in my house I'd have laughed.
From now on I am going to keep my storage areas better
organized and maybe even "shop at home" before hitting the
stores

Window Treatments on the Cheap
by Kathy Wilson
Quick, easy ideas for dressing your windows
The Budget Decorator shares her quick, easy ideas for
dressings your windows without breaking the bank.
When deciding how to dress your windows, first take into
account the style of the room. Most rooms are more casual
these days, and don't require the heavy pinch pleat draperies
of the past.
Consider using ready-made items you might already own to
create your window treatments. Lace tablecloths, pretty
dishtowels, sheets and even quilts can make creative and
charming window treatments.
If you don't know how to sew, pick up some iron on hem tape at
your local craft store. You can create simple hems and rod
pockets easily with your iron. I don't recommend this for
curtains that will be washed frequently. However, if the hem
tape wears out, it can always be redone.
Consider adding layers to your windows as your budget allows.
First, a mini-blind for some privacy, then later, some sheers
for softness. Finally, you might add curtain panels and a
valance for a custom look that looks great all along the way.
Be sure to hang your window treatments so they pull clear of
the windows when open. This will make your windows look larger
and let in more light. Even covering an inch or two of the
window surface reduces the light in a room significantly. Hang
them as high as you can, near the ceiling line if possible. It
will add height to the room, making it appear larger and less
boxlike.
Use creative ideas for curtain rods as well. A garden room
might do well with a smooth, long branch made into a rod. A
sports oriented family room might be inspired by a ski or a
hockey stick. Even an old boat oar would do in the right
setting.
Use your imagination, use your creativity, and save that cash!

Evaluating a Landlord

I have been both a tenant and a landlord. While I do not know
of a way to find out if the landlord repairs things in a
timely manner, the general condition of the place when it is
being shown for rent will give you some idea. If there are
many things that you see that need repair, you may wish to
look elsewhere. If he will not fix it to show it, then getting
him to fix it after you are in will be a challenge.

Water Bottles
I drink a lot of water daily. For the longest time, I
purchased the cases of bottled water (24-16.9 ounce bottles)
for about $5 to $6 per case. My neighborhood started a
recycling program, so I started saving the bottles. I then
realized that I could recycle and save money by reusing my
bottles by filling them up with the drinking water from the
store. The drinking water at the store is 39 cents per gallon
if you bring your own container. A case of bottled water (24-
16.9 ounce bottles) is equivalent to about three gallons. Now,
I can fill up a case of bottled water for a little over $1 as
opposed to $5!

Telephone Tax Shortcut
Your story on the telephone tax rebate
mentioned that if your phone bill isn't more than $60 a month,
you needn't go through the silly exercise of looking up all
your bills for three years. I used the "estimate" method in
Quicken's Turbo Tax, entered all my phone bills, which have
been consistently about $61-$63 a month (I have a home-based
business) and the result was a deduction of $28, two bucks
less than the standard deduction of $30! UGH! This is so
typical of tax time and one of the reasons why I take the time
to do my own taxes.
