David Aks leads Jennifer Higdon's "Blue Cathedral"--with its sound of ringing bells--and two powerful pieces that feature quite different heroes: Goethe's Count Egmont in Beethoven's "Egmont Overture"and the Renaissance painter Matthís Grúnewald in Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler." This year's Young Artist Competition Winner, Kristina Jacinth, performs Rachmaninoff's youthful "First Piano Concerto." Concerts are preceded by a free lecture one hour prior to their start time. Born in Philadelphia to Korean parents, Sarah Chang began studying violin at age four and by age eight made her New York Philharmonic debut. Winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, Chang's remarkable playing entrances critics with its wide ranging attack: at once she is "digging into the music with iron determination...but playing ultimately with a light beauty, a sound with the strength of spider's silk." (New York Times). Accompanied by Ashley Wass, piano. Program: Beethoven; "Kreutzer" Sonata, Op. 47; Richard Danielpour: River of Light (World Premier); Prokofiev: Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 94.
