Dems Question FCC's Credibility WASHINGTON Congressional Democrats on Wednesday accused the Federal Communications Commission of all manner of ills, ranging from favoritism to a botched investigation. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was especially pointed in his questions as he accused the commission of usurping power that belongs to Congress. "The FCC is not a legislative body. That role resides here, in this room, with the people's elected representatives," Dingell told the commissioners. "When the FCC loses sight of its proper role, consumers suffer, as does the credibility of the FCC. I fear that this has too often been the case." more ? ? NBCU, MobiTV in Pact NEW YORK NBC Universal said it has partnered with the mobile video subscription service MobiTV to both sell full-length episodes of prime-time shows from its top networks and to launch several new mobile video channels. MobiTV, which claims 2 million U.S. subscribers, delivers live linear feeds of TV networks to mobile subscribers, including the NBCU networks CNBC and MSNBC. This new deal creates a video-on-demand platform for the service that will allow users to pay $1.99 to watch individual episodes of shows such as NBC's The Office and Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Gallactica on their phones. NBC will also launch five channels on MobiTV that will feature free, short-from content. more ? ? Legacy Snuffs Out Challenge CHICAGO The American Legacy Foundation beat back the last remnant of a challenge from Lorillard Tobacco Wednesday when the Federal Communications Commission ruled in the smoking prevention group's favor. The commission dismissed the cigarette maker's claim that an ad for the "Truth" campaign violated FCC rules by including recordings from telephone conversations. The offending ad was a radio spot in which a young actor identifying himself as a dog walker called the Lorillard switchboard. He offered to sell the company urine from his dogs to help the company manufacture cigarettes. more ? ? Colorado Tourism Bows Ads BOSTON The Colorado Tourism Office said it has launched a spring campaign themed "Let's talk Colorado" as part of a nearly $20 million effort to lure visitors by making emotional connections with target segments like families, affluent travelers and couples. This marks MMG Worldwide's first work for the client since it added the business late last year, and the client describes the push as its biggest ever. more ? |
