? 3 Pursue $130 Mil. Staples Media
NEW YORK Staples is mulling three finalists, including primary incumbent MediaCom, in the review of media chores on its estimated $130 million ad account, according to sources. In addition to WPP Group's MediaCom, Publicis Groupe's Zenith Media and Interpublic Group's Universal McCann are in contention, per sources. All are pitching from their offices in New York. Pile and Co., the consulting firm here, is overseeing the search for the client, which is headquartered in Framingham, Mass. The client declined to identify the three finalists. Executives from the shops and Pile and Co. either declined comment or could not be reached. more ?

? Q&A: SMG's Gadsby Takes Charge
CHICAGO A pioneer in the field of multicultural media strategy, Starcom MediaVest Group last week realigned its offerings to give each of its general market agencies--Starcom and MediaVest--its own specialty unit. In doing so, the company's previous multicultural arm, Tapestry, was aligned with Starcom. A new entity, Forty Two Degrees, has been formed for MediaVest. They will function as separate operating units of a new division, SMG Multicultural, headed by former Tapestry CEO Monica Gadsby. Gadsby, who's been a marketing player for 20 years, answered questions from Adweek senior reporter Aaron Baar about the move and the multicultural media landscape. more ?

? Critique: Coke Zero Hits the Mark
NEW YORK Adweek columnist Barbara Lippert writes, "When I first heard about promoting Coke Zero with a fake lawsuit (having Coke Classic sue its Zero counterpart for "taste infringement"), I thought the concept might have originated at the law firm of "Obvious & Stupid." I mean really, how far can we suspend disbelief? And who's gonna care enough to try to figure it out? And aren't commercials that use lawyer jokes in order to make fun of legalese--and happen to come from giant conservative global corporations, by the way--pretty lame, anyhow? As it turns out, the Internet video attracted so much underground attention that the two-minute low-budget clip was cut into three 20-second TV spots, which now run on American Idol and during March Madness games." more ?

? Former Bravo CEO Joins Zyman
NEW YORK Gary Bassell, former chairman and CEO of the Bravo Group, has joined the Zyman Group, an Atlanta-based management consulting firm. He has been named managing principal for the Marketing to Hispanic (M2H) Practice Group and co-lead for all multicultural business strategy practices, which also include the African-American and Asian markets, confirmed a representative at Zyman. He joins Zyman's managing principal Alfredo Ortiz, who had been president of Grupo Mas, an Atlanta company specializing in the U.S. Hispanic market. Zyman acquired the business strategy development firm in fall 2006. Grupo Mas has been integrated into Zyman's headquarters. more ?

? Goodlife Launches Campaign
NEW YORK What constitutes "the good life" for your pets? According to new spots from TBWAChiatDay in Playa del Rey, Calif., introducing a dog and cat food called Goodlife, chasing bubbles and jumping into pools as Frank Sinatra croons will do just fine. Mars Pet Care, which also markets Pedigree, Sheeba and Whisk as, introduced the premium Goodlife brand at the beginning of the year, and commercials promoting the product will remain on air through November. Print and interactive work are also in the mix. more ?

? Metromix Mulls Trio
CHICAGO Three Chicago agencies are competing to handle creative and media duties on Metromix, a Web-based listing of local activities and events, sources said. Estimated billings are $10 million. In the hunt are Publicis Groupe shops Leo Burnett and Digitas and Omnicom Group's DDB, the creative incumbent for Metromix parent, The Chicago Tribune. more ?
