Risky Painkillers
US researchers discovered that over-the-counter painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen can significantly raise blood pressure and thus the risk of heart disease among men. The study from Boston's Brigham & Women's Hospital showed that men who frequently took the widely used painkillers had up to a 38% increased risk of developing high blood pressure. The highest risk was associated with NSAIDs, which include ibuprofen, marketed under the brand names Advil, Motrin, and Nuprin and naproxen, sold as Aleve and Naprosyn. [REUTERS]

If you or a loved one has taken Aleve and subsequently experienced a heart attack or stroke, please contact an [ALEVE] lawyer who will review your claim at no charge.

Abortion Bill
Senate Bill 80 was recently approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee which was set in place to inform women seeking abortions of the apparent pain their fetuses will go through. The bill has yet to be passed by the full Senate, but would let pregnant women know that by 20 weeks' gestation, the unborn child has the physical structures necessary to experience pain. Fertility Hot Bath
Hot baths, hot tubs, and whirlpools may harm men’s fertility. Researchers from the University of California San Francisco found cessation of exposure to wet heat can drastically increase total long term motile sperm account. Testicular hyperthermia has a negative effect on male fertility and is recognized as a cause of impaired male sperm production. Heat generated either exogenously or endogenously decreases sperm concentration, impairs motility, and reduces the number of morphologically normal sperm. [BBC NEWS]

Fat Chance at Fertility
Obese couples have a more difficult time conceiving a baby than couples of normal weight. Danish researchers found if both the man and woman were obese, their chances of having to wait longer than a year before the woman became pregnant were nearly three times higher than for couples of normal weight. Semen quality and levels of reproductive hormones were diminished in overweight men and being overweight can harm ovulation, conception, and early fetal development in women. [WEB MD]

Creamy Babies
A diet rich in ice cream and other high-fat dairy foods may lower the risk of one type of infertility and increase ones chances of conceiving. Harvard researchers found that women who ate two or more low-fat dairy products a day were nearly twice as likely to have 27% more trouble conceiving because of lack of ovulation than women who ate less than one serving of such foods a week. [BLOOMBERG]

Caffeine Cycle
And the debate continues... New research suggests early morning caffeine does not make people more alert than normal, it simply eases withdrawal symptoms which build up overnight. Researchers from the University of Bristol found that only those who avoid coffee for an extended time and then consume caffeine will get a buzz from the beverage. Regular consumers who drink two or more cups of coffee a day are in a constant cycle of withdrawal reversal. [USA TODAY]

Caloric Longevity
People of normal weight who restrict caloric intake may live longer because there will be less oxidative damage in muscle cells. Such damage has been linked to aging and lowers free-radical production by inducing the formation of efficient mitochondria. A calorie-restricted diet provides all the nutrients necessary for a healthy life but minimizes the supply of energy supplied in the diet. [BLOOMBERG]

Teen Break Out
Recent research reveals stress makes a teen 23% more likely to experience a severe acne outbreak. The stress of homework, exams, and social bullying can ignite inflammatory processes that lead to acne outbreaks. Researchers found a significant positive correlation between stress levels and severity of acne papulopustulosa, the form of acne marked by pimples. On the other hand, regular blackheads, whiteheads, and pustules are all caused by a waxy substance called sebum that can be overproduced and clog pores. [REUTERS]

Secret Smokers
One in 10 people are "secret smokers" who try to keep their habit hidden. A recent survey revealed 52% of smokers kept their habit secret from their parents, 30% lied to their general practitioner, and 25% kept it concealed from their employer. One or two cigarettes a day can still cause long-term damage. [EARTH TIMES]

Electrode Headaches
Stimulating nerves in the brain may help ease pain for people who have not been able to find relief from cluster headaches. This type of headache occur in bouts or clusters that last from a week to a year, with severe headaches reoccurring on one side of the head. The attacks may last from 15 minutes to three hours. Doctors from the University College London in Britain found that occipital nerve stimulation for cluster headache seems to offer a safe, effective treatment option. [GUARDIAN UNLIMITED]
