Dear Reader,

I hope this issue of Ask The Computer Lady finds you doing well.
I have not had much time to sew in the past week, but I am looking
forward to spending some time in my sewing room soon.

I have a special deal just for Computer Lady readers to tell you
about. The folks at www.bostonandsonimports.com (That would be
my son, Aaron and I) have a coupon code that can be used for
10% off the purchase of any of our Congo necklaces for the rest of
March. Just put a congo necklace or two in your shopping cart, and
when you checkout, use the coupon code "CONGOTEN". Don't type the
quotes.

Have a great week,
Elizabeth

--Card Balances Soar in Holiday Spending Spree--
The average American spends $935 for Christmas gifts every
year. The 2006 holiday season was no different. Now, many
Americans are feeling the pinch as they struggle to meet
higher minimum payments. Are you one of them? If you're
suffering because of a high debt load, it's NOT your fault.
The system has been designed to milk you dry. Here's what
this is all about: My name is Clint Holland. I was once
$213,000 in debt. But thanks to providence, I discovered a
breakthrough in debt elimination and became debt free in
just 4 years. Now I've developed a system that anyone can
use to pay off all their debt, including the mortgage, in
just 3-5 years... without bankruptcy, debt consolidation, or
any unethical tactics. Will you let me help you? Member BBB.

Dear Computer Lady,

When I put a CD in my computer I get a loud thumping noise and I am
unable to play it. I get a message that says the CD drive is busy.
I have to hit the eject button for the noise to stop.

Thanks for your help, G.

Dear G,

CD ROM drives have parts that move at high speeds, and because of
this they tend to wear out rather quickly.

The symptoms you are describing sound like your CD-ROM drive has
become unbalanced and will need to be replaced. You should be able
to bring your tower into a local repair shop and have the drive
replaced.

If you are brave, you can purchase a replacement drive for $30 to
$40 dollars and replace it yourself. You will need to open your
computer case, remove the 4 screws that hold in the drive, and
unplug the data cable and the power cable.

Be sure that you keep the red stripe on the data cable facing the
same direction when you plug it into the new drive.

Dear Computer Lady,

Thanks for all your help! I just got a new computer and had it
connected to my old one with a cable router. The young guy that
installed it said I don't need a antivirus now, because the router
takes the place of antivirus program.

Do you agree? Thanks! Bonnie

Dear Bonnie,

I do not agree! Make sure you have antivirus protection on your
computer.

The young guy who installed your router was heading down the right
road, but he took a wrong turn somewhere.

When you install a cable router, the router acts as a hardware
firewall. This hardware firewall will make your computer invisible
on the internet and protect you from hackers. With this protection,
you would not need firewall software installed on your computer.

The router does not protect you from viruses which usually come from
e-mail messages, files that you download, and websites that you
would visit.

As you probably already know, I prefer AVG antivirus at:

Dear Computer Lady,

How do I wrap text around or beside a picture or text box while
working in Word??

Thanks for all your good help.

Peg

Dear Peg,

Microsoft Word is a word processing program, and while it does allow
you to combine text and graphics, it is not always easy. I have
found that it is also not always possible to get the text and
pictures to do exactly what I want them to do.

I am going to give you basic directions for wrapping text around a
picture or text box in Word.

In Word, right click on your picture, and click on "Format Picture".

In the "Format Picture" window, click on the "Layout" tab and select
the style that you want and click "OK".

Now, you can move the picture around in the word document, and the
text will flow around your image.

Dear Computer Lady,

I have saved some files on CD and they are all now read only.
How do I remove the read only so I can edit these.

Thank you, Donna

Dear Donna,

Your files became read only when they were transferred to the CD disk.
That is because you can't edit files when they are on a CD. Once you
have copied the files back to your hard drive, you can highlight all
the files in any folder by clicking on one of the files and then
pressing they Ctrl & A keys on your keyboard. This selects all the
files in the folder. Once all the files are highlighted, you can right
click on any one of them, and click "Properties". Click to remove the
check mark from "Read Only" and then click "OK". That will be much
faster than doing them one at a time.

My message: Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so much for you nifty
information. For someone as computer illiterate as I, this is a
wonderful service you perform. I have just installed the AVG virus
and malware you recommended and I love it. It does not bog down my
computer like Nortons did and is very simple to use. Even for
someone like me. Thanks again.
