TURN THAT MULCH
If you'd like to avoid having to throw away last year's mulch that's around
your plants, here's a tip from a professional landscaper who worked on our
yard. The main reason old mulch has to be removed is it tends to collect
pests and grow fungi. The landscaper said that in areas where the
temperature drops below freezing, the trick is to turn and/or stir up the
mulch just before or during the freeze. One of those claw tools, where you
push it into the ground & turn, works great for this. Do it before/during
several freezes for a better result. This will usually get rid of pests
and/or fungi, then you can just put some new mulch on top of the old when
the time comes. The old mulch will eventually decompose into the soil,
enriching it. POST IT...near the door to your garden.

CHECK YOUR DEADBOLTS
This is an important message regarding your home locks. The video at the
link below will show you the new & extremely easy way criminals can break
into your home. The good news is that they mention two brands of locks,
Medeco & Primus, that are resistant to this kind of break in.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr23tpWX8lM
If you have the money, it might not be a bad idea to get the better locks.
But if money is tight, then I'd just keep an eye on crime in your area (you
should be doing this anyway), and if you start hearing about break ins like
this, then definitely take measures to protect yourself. I like that the
article also talks about the benefit of alarms, pets, and lighting. Be sure
to check out our back issues for more security tips, or watch "It Takes a
Thief" on Discovery Channel. POST IT...near your alarm panel, or under
"locksmiths" in the yellow pages. Thanks to Laura G. for sending this tip
to us.

WEATHER FOR YOUR STREET
The Weather Channel has a great new feature, you can actually get street
level weather maps. It does get to the point, where it won't register, if
you zoom in too far, but you should be able to have a better feel for where
your home actually is. This can be especially important during tornado
season. So check it out at...
www.weather.com
Then enter in your zip code, then click on "New Radar Maps." Then you
should end up on the interactive map, click on it, and can use your
"roller" to zoom in or out. Pause momentarily to allow the streets time to
pop up. POST IT...on your computer.

RECIPE: ROLO TURTLES from Shirley B.
Well, I know this is two Rolo recipes in a row, but this one from Shirley B.
was too good not to pass on. I think it would be great fun for kids too.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil or
parchment paper, or spray with cooking spray. Place small pretzels ('snaps"
or little twists) on cookie sheet(you don't need much space between them).
Place a Rolo on top of each pretzel. Place in preheated oven for about 2
minutes. (Rolos will soften after this amount of time, but will not melt.)
Remove from oven and immediately press down pecan half on top of Rolo. Let
cool. Enjoy!!! POST IT...in your recipe box.

FINAL WORDS
JOKE (from Laura G.)
From a church bulletin, obviously emphasizing the need for correct
punctuation...
"For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery
downstairs."
QUOTE
"You know, I once read an interesting book which said that, uh, most people
lost in the wilds, they, they die of shame. Yeah, see, they die of shame.
'What did I do wrong? How could I have gotten myself into this?' And so they
sit there and they... die. Because they didn't do the one thing that would
save their lives. Thinking."
~~from the movie, "The Edge," written by David Mamet
EDITOR'S NOTE: I think this is often true in so many difficult situations.
People spend more time thinking of the past & how they could have avoided
getting into the situation, instead of focusing on the present & forming a
plan to deal with the situation at hand.
