More on robots and brain interfaces Yesterday, a colleague in the computer science department asked me to help him with some data analysis. (As with many academic psychologists, I am also a statistician and teach our stat courses.) It turns out that this prof (let's call him "Dr. X," as I don't want to use his name, and it has the bonus of sounding evil) is working on brain/machine interfaces, and the data were recordings of single neurons. I figured this was a great opportunity to become BOL's official double agent in the robot camp. I did help him, both to gain his trust and perhaps get my name on a publication.... More details when they become available. Dave (the psychologist)
The man stickin' it to the alternative fuel man Most of the stuff you guys talk about I use daily, so I thought you guys might appreciate something a bit different. It is an article in the Decatur, Illinois local paper that deals a bit with alternative fuel tech and the Taxman. Happy reading. Dave from Decatur, Illinois
P***s will not fall from the sky Hi Tom, Molly, and Veronica, I have been hearing a lot on the show about p***s falling from the sky because of the change to daylight saving time. I would like to help you put all fears to rest. We in the airlines use Zulu time, or Universal standard time, for all flight operations. This has no daylight savings issue. The flight planning computers use it, the aircraft use it, and ATC uses it. It's the only way to keep it all straight when flying across country or around the world. Thanks for all the great podcasts, looking forward to many more. Edward Buzz town USA P.S. Loved V on TWIT last Sunday. That was one of the better TWITs in a while.
OSX in March rumor is bunk I would like to personally debunk the OS X 10.5 March release rumor. Anyone who has actually used the betas would likely agree. While the new features are working wonderfully, many features introduced in Tiger are now broken. And don't even get me started on 10.5 Server. If Apple sticks to their usual beta schedule, they still have two more beta builds before for the final gold beta, which would indicate to me a late May/early June release, right around WWDC time. Keep up the good work, love the show. Jonathan of Florida
Make up your own Apple rumor About a way to make up your own apple rumor. Just select one in each category and rumor away. --Andrew Grin
Super cheap HDMI cables I mentioned this when I got my PS3, but at Newegg they have incredible, cheap, good HDMI cables. Most are from Link Depot for as little as $7.69 for a 3.3 foot to $9.29 for a 16 foot!! Now that's a deal. -Eric (rockinphotog) Not receiving podcasts? Sign up now! MEET THE CAST
Molly Wood engages in ruthless industry analysis (that is, ranting) in the form of the Daily Buzz, the Buzz Report video, and, of course, the Buzz Out Loud podcast. Tom Merritt is the author of CNET's The Real Deal column, the star of many CNET.com how-to videos, and of course, the sometimes outnumbered cohost of Buzz Out Loud. Veronica Belmont is Buzz Out Loud's producer extraordinaire, cohost of the podcast, and CNET's in-house podcast evangelist. Oh, and she also has a day job.
