Open Architecture Network
find out more

Just over a year ago we were given an incredible opportunity with the TED Prize to make "one wish to change the world". A pretty daunting task if you think about it. However if you get one wish, you might as well wish big.

Our Wish: To develop a place that will support innovative, sustainable and collaborative design solutions for improving the living standards of 5 billion people.

Fast forward twelve months and we are less than a week from launching the Open Architecture Network, a stand alone site that allows will allow designers, community groups, NGO's and others to post projects, browse others, comment and review projects, discuss relevant topics, contribute to shared resources, collaborate with each other and access project management tools to support their work. Most exciting of all, the beta version of the network will launch on March 8th at the 2007 TED conference.

As we are launching a beta we will be adding and refining functionality over the next year and the site will only be a good as we make it. So when we launch, March 8th (we will email you the link), logon and make it yours. Tell us what works, what doesn't work and we will do our best to make it sing like Pavarotti in the shower.

In the run up to the launch we are currently inviting any groups interested in submitting more than five projects this year to become one of the networks founding content partners. These partners will be listed on the sponsors page and will be highlighted on stage at the launch. Currently the OAN has two dozen content partners from around the world and if you are interested in adding your name to the list please email the site administrator before March 5th.

Finally a special thanks to all who have made this possible including Sun Microsystems, Hot Studio, Creative Commons, AMD, TED and others.

More info can be heard via this Treehugger radio interview.

Biloxi Model Home Program Update

The Model Home Program is providing design services and financial assistance for the construction of a number of new houses for families in East Biloxi whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. For our seven families, construction began on their homes in January and building is now well underway. Thank you to all our donors and sponsors and of course all the incredible architects without whom these new homes would not have been possible.

In addition, a huge Biloxi welcome to two additional Americorps team members Sarah Naughton and Jennifer Gurney, who are joining the team down on the Gulf Coast.

Biloxi Model Home Architects:
Brett Zamore Design, Studio Gang Architects, Marlon Blackwell, CP+D Workshop, Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, MC2 Architects and Huff and Gooden Architects

Architecture for Humanity gets a new dimension

After 60 jurors from around the world reviewed more than 800 entries into the logo competition we are pleased to announce Michael DiTullo as the winning designer. By day Michael is the design director for Converse (yup, the Chuck Taylors) and in his spare time he is a moderator to the blog Core 77 (under the moniker Yo). We were also excited to find out that Michael was also part of a team that entered the 2002 Mobile HIV/AIDS outreach competition.

We all like the idea of adopting a clean architectural element and using it in funky ways to show the professional service that Architecture for Humanity brings its' clients. Michael is currently working with us to blow out his 'dimension concept', so stay tuned for our new look in the coming months.

A huge thanks again to all the entrants and congrats to all the finalists.
