? Goodby Exits Volvo Pitch
NEW YORK Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, a late entrant in Volvo's $150 million global creative review, has exited in order to pursue another car account, the client said, though the agency did not identify the automaker. One likely possibility, according to sources, is Hyundai Motor America, which on Friday confirmed it has split with lead incumbent The Richards Group and launched a review of its account. Hyundai, which spent nearly $600 million in major measured media last year, said that its COO, Steve Wilhite, and its new CMO, Joel Ewanick, would invite a select group of agencies to pitch. Neither Goodby nor Hyundai could immediately be reached for comment. When Goodby entered the contest four weeks ago, the San Francisco-based Omnicom Group agency became a partner to sister shop 180 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. At the time, the entrance was seen as bolstering 180's chances of winning. 180, which has a small office in Los Angeles, remains in the pitch on its own. more ?

? Q&A: Y&R Brands' CEO Stringham
NEW YORK After six years on the client side, Peter Stringham has returned home. Home to the agency business, home to North America (where he has spent the bulk of his 31-year career) and home to 285 Madison Avenue in New York, where he previously worked as North American CEO of Young & Rubicam. This time, the 57-year-old Canadian has taken the reins of Young & Rubicam Brands, which houses 18 agencies including Y&R, Wunderman, Burson-Marsteller and Landor Associates. On Thursday, his third day as CEO of Y&R Brands, he sat down with Adweek senior reporter Andrew McMains to discuss the challenges ahead, the lessons he learned as global marketing chief at HSBC and what it's like to work with WPP Group CEO Martin Sorrell. more ?

? Critique: MasterCard's Magic Moment
NEW YORK Adweek columnist Barbara Lippert writes, "'Ella Phant,' one of two new MasterCard spots that broke last night on the Academy Awards, is the kind of sweet, sweeping, cinematic commercial that was so lacking at this year's Super Bowl--and so perfect for the Oscars. It's got emotion, magic, an animal theme--and against my most cynical judgment, I loved it. But I must say that the establishing shot comes off as a bit dodgy, considering this 60-second mini-movie is directed by Jim Sheridan. The spot opens on a zookeeper grooming his elephant, who stands in front of rocks that look disturbingly fake. Also it's pretty easy to understand that the zookeeper has a cold-the 400 sneezes seem kind of excessive." more ?

? Univision Agrees to FCC Fine
WASHINGTON Univision has agreed to pay a record $24 million fine as part of a deal over allegations that the nation's largest Spanish-language network broke rules for educational children's programming. The penalty is part of a consent decree that would pave the way for Univision to complete a $12.3 billion sale to private investors. For the sale to go through—and Univision's broadcast license transferred—a majority of the FCC's five commissioners must vote for it. Commission officials said FCC chairman Kevin Martin, who has been an aggressive enforcer of the nation's content regulations on indecency and is now giving the kidvid rules the same treatment, supports the deal. more ?
